@kfdm building something like that for the Fediverse is on our todolist, but I am not focusing on it because I know it will cause an outrage about Mastodon wanting to centralize everything and capture all users or something of the sort. For many very vocal people there, it’s better to have a very bad user experience than something imperfect but which works
We would like to fix it otherwise, by having the authoring software mark a link as being a link to a specific AP object so when displaying the status you can know it right away and do what is correct.
@tchambers very clear list and agreee on all of them. I hope most of those will be fixed on Mastodon by the end of the year (at least that’s the plan).
#3 is still one that I don’t have many doable ideas on how to fix properly 😞
On Thursday I will participate in the NGI Impact Stories panel to explain how @ngi is helping Mastodon, and on Friday on a another panel to discuss tech sovereignty and what can bring in Europe with @openwebsearcheu
If you also attend, please come say hi! I will have some Mastodon stickers to distribute and will be happy to discuss anything Mastodon / Fediverse related
@jensimmons I would love to have a major browser start making progress on supporting custom protocol handlers (or any alternative solution) that could make it smooth for Fediverse users to interact cross-instances. For example opening fedi://front-end.social/@jensimmons and have the browser direct me to your profile on my instance. That will probably require work with the W3c and we can help, but having implementors with us is really needed
Our team is growing, and I am very excited that there are now 2 developers focused on the Mastodon web interface, with a designer joining in a few weeks.
We are implementing the final version of RFC9421 (HTTP Signatures) in Mastodon, and would like to test this with other ActivityPub implementations.
Do you know of any AP implementations supporting both incoming (verification) and outgoing (signing) RFC9421 signatures, and if possible with support for the double-knocking mechanism as described in https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-http-signature/ (section 3.5)?
@thisismissem@randahl It looks like they all follow the recommended accounts, but we do not see anything abnormal regarding their emails or IPs, and some are definitely real people.
We keep a close eye on this, but we can not block / ban every user that follows some recommended accounts and does not post.
@BeAware So far, we are not planning to forbid linking to statuses if the person refuses to be quoted. A link is not a quote. There are still a lot of open questions (like, what is the UI behaviour if you paste such a link into the composer? Maybe we should ask the user if they want to transform it into a quote?). This is something we have in mind and will continue working on it. So far we mostly focused on the ActivityPub side of things.
@BeAware This is a very hard question in a decentralised network, as you can not trust any other servers. The research and pre-FEP discussion that we linked in the blog post go into more detail around those questions. @pierrenick
@laurenshof I just read the latest Fediverse report, and wanted to mention that other AP implementors like Mastodon were also at the longform workshop along with the other mentioned projects. We (Mastodon) want to ensure that consuming long form content over ActivityPub is the best experience possible and are excited with what is cooking :)
