The software is opinionated (like every software) and allow-list based federation is not something that the team feels is a good idea and there are other things to try.
Funding is good, but funding something / someone does not mean it will be integrated in Mastodon

@jdp23 @ophiocephalic @thisismissem @Gargron @eilah_tan I dont think anybody said otherwise, and as I said, we want to improve things here. According to internal tickets, I think we are open to have a default (opt-out at install) blocklist with the "worst-of-the-worst” servers, and the ability to subscribe to other community-maintained blocklists.

@thisismissem @jdp23 @Gargron @ophiocephalic @eilah_tan I dont think the opinion on this feature changed, if I understand if correctly (allowing only selected servers to federate). This is very hostile to small instances and against the federation principles.
But we want to improve blocks, including lists syncing, admin approval before apply and such.
We also have a soon merged feature notifying users of severed relationships due to blocks.

@Drbruced We (the Mastodon team) can probably help as well 👍

@b0rk This has been discussed but it requires backend / federation changes, so for now this is not customisable as it allows experimenting with the feature quickly.
If the results are good and we find the best form for this feature (it will most probably evolve), then we might do it.
