This is where I think Akkoma's "bubble" timeline idea is amazing. It allows you to list all the instances you want to appear on your instance's timeline and it will pull their timelines and then stitch it together to make a "neighbourhood" timeline in the Bubble Timeline. This is where I can still follow other instances without the giant firehose effect of the federated timeline after I add noisy relay servers.
Keep in mind that you still need a list of relay servers but at least the bubble timeline concept lets you tailor that experience. This is probably one of the best features Akkoma has came up with. Hopefully it's something that Mastodon takes up in the future.
I do like the concept that you found by @g3rv4 but I think his tool only works with Mastodon, not sure if it works with Akkoma. If it does, it'll be nice to try out because content discovery is probably the biggest issue for single user instances.
I'm also really keen on that relay implementation that @nova & her team are working on, sounds like it can also solve the issues that many small & single user instances are facing when it comes to getting more content as well.
Love seeing so much creativity to solve problems for the #fediverse, thanks everyone!
Originally thought I had the Samsung 870 EVO, turns out my server has the Samsung 860 EVO instead ... ooops lol. Still quite performant.
Not sure what you consider to be "write heavy", have had this drive in my home server for almost 2 years now. Attached is a copy of the smartctl output from my server. According to the LBA to TBW calculator, it's the equivalent of almost 63 TB written. Mind you this server doesn't do a ton, most of the writes are log files when it used to run OPNSense.
On my #Akkoma instance I added #hachyderm, #mstdnca, InfoSec.exchange and a bunch of other #Canadian instances into what it calls a "bubble" timeline which basically stitches a timeline from multiple instances as if they're part of the local timeline and it's a glorious mix of Canadiana from the Canadian instances, with techy/nerdy posts from #Hachyderm & InfoSec.exchange, it's amazing!
Best of all, no algorithms to push me around for ad views!
The property tax system might not work. There are some areas in #Ontario that have 2 tier municipal government where public transit is the domain of the upper tier government. For example, York Region Transit is supposed to serve the entire York Region. Though in reality, there are several towns or sections of towns that don't get much in terms of service or have lost service.
If we have it paid through the property tax system, those who don't get service and must use a car, would end up subsidizing the more urban areas for their "free" transit rides. Public transit in North America is already subsidized, not sure if shifting the rest of the burden on to taxpayers would be fair especially if they can't benefit from the service at all.
It's going to be very hard to convince property owners would be willing to pay for something they cannot benefit at all to subsidize someone in the more urbanized section of the region transit access so they don't need to pay on the bus/train.
