Another one from the Cameron Art Museum in North Carolina --from the Dreamer series, and it's all mathematical expressions and equations, some from re-used math texts. I didn't see it until I got close. Just loved it. My favorite piece! It's by Rosalia Torres-Weiner. #art
Whee!! One new grad student started with me last week; one MD/PhD student started a rotation with me yesterday, and my research scientist should be meeting with me tomorrow, and then starting in another week and some.
Plus the high schoolers want to stick around and continue learning, and some undergrads are chatting with me next week about research opportunities. From zero to full in no time flat! Two years of just me here, and then here we are-- This WILL be interesting. 😁
Yeah. I have a meeting next week with a student I haven't met in person, and I was looking at their first name and wondering is that a male or female name because it could be either. I happen to have known both men and women with that first name. And then I realized: it really doesn't matter! Who cares?? All it would affect is my preconceptions, and who the hell needs that?
So I got notification that my info was caught in a data breach, with a free year of Experianworks credit monitoring as recompense--just in time for the last free year of Experianworks monitoring from the *last* breach to expire.
I learned a character in #japanese the other day that was defined as amount; or picture frame. 🤬
I was swearing at that--how can one word have meanings that dissimilar? How can I remember that?
But then today walking in the city I passed the Latitude nightclub. I'd seen that in other cities-- it is a good name for a nightclub, in the sense of permission to bend the rules a bit.
Or a line in the map marking distance from the equator.
When it comes to the question, would you rather do this over email or over the phone? It is amazing how many times I choose "over the phone" these days. 😱 But it's also surprising how many times a half hour phone call will save days of email.
You know Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, right? She's got a Barbie doll and everything! 😁 (Seriously, she's awesome. Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and she's all about space.)
Gaah. My pop is having heart surgery today. They expect to just keep him overnight and send him home tomorrow, but it's still hanging over my head and making it darned hard to focus. Fingers crossed 🤞🤞 He's in good spirits and my brother is handling transport etc. All I can do is wait.
#covid I was reminded about the 2014 Ebola outbreak that nearly made it into the US, but under Obama's watch it got shut down. Thank God Trump and his cronies weren't in charge at that point! We'd have Ebola endemic around the world, by now. 😡
@thomasfuchs you also need to model the changing probability with the different variants over the years too--my understanding is that it has not been constant, plus it varies with vaccination status. I know it is still abominably high but I'd love to see a more nuanced model.
@grillchen Really? What was it about, what was your prompt, and how did it fall short? I've been finding those systems work surprisingly well at summarizing papers in my field.
@feld Yeast infections. It's called thrush when it infects your mouth (and you can see how it might get there through oral sex). It's not exactly the end of the world; not sure it qualifies as "something terrible". Yeesh.
I dunno, I come on Fedi and there's so much serious stuff being posted, I feel bad just being happy or goofy about anything. Don't mind me if I stay quiet for a bit!
