the fediverse is the kind of place where we could say "it'd be cool if we could build social playlists together here" and then create a new activitypub type and add handling for it to our server platforms and boom have shared social playlist support across the fediverse if we weren't always busy building big unwieldy copies of corporate attention farms.

institutions, including and especially corporations, don't deserve your loyalty, respect, or defense.

none of 'em.

save loyalty, respect, and defense for people, not institutions.

people are what is left when institutions fall.

if you work for one of these companies, you are not the problem! your employers are giving you impossible goals to meet with inadequate resources with which to even attempt the impossible.

their entire premise, their structure and their methodologies, are just inherently broken and caustic.

don't take this personally as an employee (hurt); take it personally as a victim of their destructive nature (angry).

my wife works for an overly large corporation most of y'all would recognize by name. her job is pretty impossible today due to the microsoft issues. I am sure she is one of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, that those statements are applicable to, and shit like this happens all the time.

these are the "most valuable" companies in the world, tripping over each others' ineptitude in providing value.

early in my time in Big Tech I worked with a guy who was the most cynical, bitter, crabby nerd I had experienced up to that point.

anyone in the office talking about anything we were doing as cool or fun or neat or great was met with "feh, fuck all this shit. this company blows." very much the type of guy that companies like to throw overboard as soon as they're identified, but this guy held some Secret Important Knowledge so they kept him around.

arbitrarily I happened across the guy outside of the office, at a very dank basement bar with loud crushing live punk slamming up out of the street outside. in his element, with his crew, he was absolutely effervescent, the veritable life of the party, and it was a joy to be in his presence.

I think about that guy a lot.

weird teasing thought bouncing through the back of my brain about how the concept of "protocols, not platforms" could have, and should have, been applied more widely to society as an intervention to prevent the destruction of small-business by big-box capital.

now that we've concluded that other species we share this planet with use language amongst themselves similarly to how we use language it makes me wonder if any of them use language for the enjoyment of riffing on language quirks the way we do.

do crows meme about the crow equivalent of jorts? has a crow ever uttered "shiny thing wife, shiny thing life" to raucous laughter?

I really do wonder.

do they tell abstract stories?

do they sing songs that get popular because they're filled with meaning?

do they write diss tracks about each other?

do they remember teaching us language?

instead of making Google just divest itself of Chrome and stop making exclusive search deals can we just force them to have a yard sale and accept all offers? like, I'd offer 'em ten bucks for G+ just for laughs, y'know? lemme get that cracked plate and the smelly shriveled up social network, and can you gimme a hand loading this into my car?

as a kid, I had a floppy disc filled with text files I created where each text file represented a different type of thing and inside the file was a list of things of that type.

I was gonna teach my computer how to understand the world around me the way I understood it.

eventually, kid me realized that lists of types of things would be insufficient. I needed relationships, comparisons, differentiations, assumptions, all sorts of complexity.

I gave up.

the titans of industry are still kids.

saw something slide by that mentioned yesterday was the 10th anniversary of Let's Encrypt and y'all, that's nice. really nice.

I remember all too well the hell of commercial certificate authorities being yet another toll gate to getting a service online. Let's Encrypt changed that for the better for us, and the fediverse as it currently exists would have been much smaller without Let's Encrypt empowering operators to get free trusted certs.

we could do with more of that sort of success.

if imma build a fedi server and a fedi client it's not gonna be some ongoing project for the commons but an ongoing project for me.

I'll share the code for it, but the ongoing maintenance of it on my end will be to make it keep getting closer to what I want for my website.

because that's what it is, the engine behind my website, ultimately.

if I can build it in such a way that I see how to reuse it for other websites I need or want to build, that's gravy and I'll head that direction because I'm lazy and like reusing shit.

if I can build it with lots of inline documentation so I don't confuse future me it might be pretty easy to screw with for future whoever.

if I then use it to blog about how I use it, I can probably distill a user's guide out of that. no reason not to share that too, it'd already be on my blog as I wrote it.

if people hit me up and tell me about bugs they found in my stuff, I could look at fixing them. if they pointed towards a fix I could use their fix.
