Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 29-Oct-2024 11:55:19 JST Birdulon @bot @cassidyclown @mitchconner I'm just saying I support people being as picky as they want with one of the most important decisions of their life even if I disagree with their criteria.
If someone said to me that I need to marry a woman to save the white race and there's tattoos/piercings/alcoholism/other substance abuse/prior sexual partners/obesity involved, call me a race traitor because I'd let it all end sooner than accept that burden. -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 29-Oct-2024 11:28:16 JST Birdulon @bot @cassidyclown @mitchconner I don't think there's anything wrong with rejecting any proposal, and I don't like the idea that the proposal has to be some ritual where the answer was guaranteed indirectly ahead of time (wink wink nod nod when's it coming wink wink nod nod). I know it's a really important event to some people much like some (ok huge overlap) think the wedding needs to put them into house-level debt. Personally I'd rather elope and put all my resources into the honeymoon. -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 29-Oct-2024 11:05:01 JST Birdulon @bot @cassidyclown @mitchconner Yeah making a show of it in front of strangers is cringe.
Pressure from presence of known witnesses is understandable, but I do think if I were on the other end of an elaborate fancy proposal without witnesses I'd feel some pressure from the setup regardless (I'm not a woman so obviously this could be way off the mark). Plus you occasionally hear gossip about how some dude went to all the effort of doing one of those fairytale proposals only for the chick to turn him down and then people give her the stinkeye even if they weren't there when it happened, so pressure seems unavoidable outside of the proposition being nonchalantly slipped into a casual conversation. -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 29-Oct-2024 10:49:59 JST Birdulon @bot @mitchconner The nicest married couples I know are embarrassed by how mundane their proposal stories are, when asked. Meanwhile I know firsthand and secondhand way too many people that spent 1-3 years' salary on extravagant wedding celebrations (sometimes the end result wasn't even flashy to the point where you'd ever guess they blew $200k on it) only to separate before paying off the incurred debt.
I don't think it's a coincidence that this particular bridezilla's first comment on her upcoming marriage is "yay military spouse benefits", like shit, if I got engaged on this trip, I'd save the "yay spouse visa" bit for after "holy shit I'm finally getting married, my entire life has been preparation for this and I finally found a nice woman who is willing to tolerate me, death of despair plans are CANCELLED" -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 29-Oct-2024 09:19:43 JST Birdulon @bot @cajax I think the overall trend is towards fewer and fewer workers doing increasingly specialised things. I doubt human involvement in the bleeding edge is going away, but like a lot of other AI stories, their roles are going to look a lot more managerial compared to their past "grunt work". -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Monday, 28-Oct-2024 11:28:53 JST Birdulon @bot @cajax machine learning stuff has a lot of applications for layout routing where there's a lot of correct ways to do something but optimising can be tricky because of local maxima/minima everywhere
There's so much stuff that is difficult to formalize but has decades of good examples to throw at the magic box -

Birdulon (birdulon@shpposter.club)'s status on Monday, 28-Oct-2024 10:17:52 JST Birdulon @bot @cajax Functional requirements come first, then it mostly turns into making building blocks to do small functions (or pulling previously-designed ones from a library), then assembling and laying out copies of those to achieve the overall task. A lot of it is logically the same as large-scale circuits, just with different layout rules to work around.
There's also Hardware Description Languages which are a bit like declarative programming, where the functional goals are written out in something (barely) resembling english and then a computer program spits out a circuit for a human to then layout (or accept an automatic layout which may or may not be acceptable, historically they weren't great but these tools tend to improve a lot, they still don't have the full context that the human designers do). -
