What Fediverse software can we expect to implement ID/age verification to cozy up to tyrannical governments? - Mastodon feels like the free bingo slot here but I could be wrong. But I fully expect any instance that's fine with state-sponsored policing of 'misinformation' to eventually fold. That's when they'll start using all the complying instances as a justification for harsher measures against independent instances. I think the time of free speech on the clearnet has come to a close and over time the last few vestiges will be routed out. The Internet no longer interprets censorship as damage. I'm in the process of deciding how much I care about hanging on to a clearnet internet presence.
Where do you draw the line between privacy/security measures that are worth it, as opposed to entirely impractical navel-gazing?
For example: I think it's really stupid when people hypothesize about backdoors in encryption when most people still haven't even moved their communications and personal files off Google/Apple.
Of course such concerns are worth considering, but not as a justification to stick with known-bad options.
@silverpill@mitra.social I definitely think that's a bug, there's two environment variables that I think it would be (the site url and the activitypub url, but both are https)url: https://cyberfreedom.ca
ACTIVITYPUB_TARGET: https://cyberfreedom.ca/.ghost/activitypub/
@sun@shitposter.world I will admit there are some good ideas weaved in there. "Technology alone cannot heal broken trust, nourish our commons, nor honour the web of life."I think it's genuinely good to have a broader understanding of your goals beyond rote utilitarianism, but this feels a bit like "privacy for good people, and none for bad people". I think if it was that simple the cypherpunks would have started there.
@icedquinn@blob.cat Very naive, if not outright misleading to presume these aren't intended outcomes on the part of the architects. A system is what the system does.
If you were wondering why everyone under a certain age lost their minds after 2012, this is a particularly compelling explanation. But if she was right, we'd all just get along nicely here on the fedi...right?
Reasons to get blocked from the Mastodon Network™️: - Shitposting - Seriousposting - Being to the right of Lindsay Graham - Being to the left of Bernie Sanders - Supporting Israel too much - Supporting Palestinians too much
@xianc78@gameliberty.club Also, many people don't realize how easy it is to de-anonymize users even if they are using Tor. Sites can use JavaScript or even CSS to de-anonymize users. I genuinely wonder how much this matters. We all KNOW how bad privacy is on the clearnet yet they still need people to submit their ID as a gating mechanism. I think the problem isn't strictly privacy, but how much of a pain it's made for them to control things.
What would be your dream Desktop Linux (or 'bsd) system configuration? Is your current setup close? What would close the gap?
I really need to learn a keyboard-centric workflow and I think part of that would include learning a tiling window management system. But I'm hoping to migrate my main system from Arch to Guix once I devote time to learning it.
