I love how we 'need' ID verification online because we allowed Big Tech corpos to ruin the Internet. Apparently we just can't reign in a dozen terrible companies that are responsible for 90% of the problems and instead have to entrench their monopoly forever.
I should stop being such a positive polly and over-the-top doompost more. So that people constantly argue with me by reassuring me that everything will be alright.
@mischievoustomato@tsundere.love There comes a point where abandoning ethics and morals defeats the purpose of "winning" in the first place. There is no coherent argument for letting predators proliferate your social and political movements that actually results in things getting better. Covering up for bad actors within your ranks just makes your side incapable of achieving your stated goals, which then makes the entire enterprise suspect.
@silverpill@mitra.social At the ICANN level? To be fair, a nation just needs to get Cloudflare or Google to agree and it will make the change for at least 90% of users. I fully expect independent sources of information online to get the "piracy site" treatment over time. Obviously, that doesn't eliminate it at all, but it does have consequences.
@silverpill@mitra.social What they are going to do? Block all instances that don't implement age verification? That's what remains to be seen. At minimum govts may DNS block fedi servers not in good graces, but that has many workarounds.
