Used a password manager for a few months very long ago, never felt comfortable with the magic of it, and shifted to writing all passwords down on a slip of paper, with a duplicate that I update when time permits and I'm bored. As far as I know, my slips of paper have not yet been hacked.
(1) Romo Lampkin (reimagined Battlestar Galactica) [because the character is tough as nails and compellingly corrupt]
(2) Henry, the lawyer in this gem of a short from the DUST YouTube channel. https://youtu.be/rv8kOzRZK8g [hung-over solo practitioner thinks on his feet to defend against the alien seizure of all water on Earth based on a close reading of the multilateral trade agreement covering this part of the galaxy—because it's hilarious]
Watching the 1960s flik "On the Beach" with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Anthony Perkins. Set in Australia after WW3, as the population waits patiently to be wiped out by a cloud of deadly radiation from the Northern Hemisphere. A little grim, but with diverting examples of US centrism. Ersatz Australian accents. Non-stop arrangements of Waltzing Matilda. An account of navigating from Manila "down the coast of Australia to Melbourne" that casually overlooks the existence of Indonesia.
@Tupp_ed There's been some commotion about self-promotion (i.e. "Visit my website!"), which I think is fine, and a different thing from an entire ecosystem designed to maximize the amount of stray attention that falls on pitches from vendors that have bribed the doorman (not to suggest you disagree!).
@Baudi@elonjet I think the standards-conformant response to such criticisms is now meant to be "You're a jackass" (which to be clear should be worn as a badge of honor).
Whew! With a sub-freezing forecast for this evening, in a fit of worry-warting I pulled as many yuzu as I could manage before it was too dark to work. This is like 1/5 of the harvest from our single tree this year, and there is still a full load on the lemon tree ... but according to Quick Search on the Internet (QSOTI, the new "Q"), they'll be okay to -3⁰C, and our forecast is for just -1⁰C. The rest can wait for tomorrow. (Japan followers, if you DM your address, I'll send a sample!)
@sarangshah Plus their blog post opens with a pitch to regulate "stablecoin" shops as banks, presumably with FDIC protection. Very nice for those shops, but a disaster for the public at large. The smell of future bailouts practically reeks from my phone just reading that.
I thought I had become inured to the fireworks over there, but this is just amazing. Beyond legacy Dilbert.
Ian: "You're in charge of the servers and the programming, whatever. Take me from top to bottom. What does the stack look like right now? What's so crazy about it? What's so abnormal about this stack versus every other large-scale system on the planet, buddy. Come on." (Amidst laughter from other devs on the call.)
@mmasnick +1. Cutesy antics FTW! What's for the CEO when the owner retains control of "software and servers" in what he weirdly defines as a "software and server company"? Signing contracts and pouring coffee?
@jonpainterphoto My instructor in Criminal Law was Julian Eule, a brilliant young lecturer who later died of chronic illness, long before his time. At the end of the course, he told us that after his 1L Crim exam at Harvard, a friend asked, "What did you think of the felony murder problem?" To which he gasped and cried in anguish, "I THOUGHT IT WAS ATTEMPT!" He was inconsolable, convinced he would fail (but he didn't, obviously). His advice to us was, "Don't talk about the exam."
