Still been chewing over GDP, and the more I think about it, the more I generally want to say it's as bad an idea as trying to derive macro (currency sovereign national gov) from micro (household finances).
GDP as a concept is reasoning about a town or national economy as if it were a corporation. It's as bad as CPI or US employment numbers in terms of a metric.
Imagine redesigning the water management for Mexico City, because that's what climate change demands. The most sobering statement from the report? It would take a decade of effort to remedy and so far no action is taking place.
Ecological infill might be part of that story, replacing hard surfaces with plant life. If it were perma-culture designed, people might also get some fresh produce out of it too.
Of the set of questions I have these days, one concerns the definition of GDP. If we live in a mixed fiat+private credit world, it stands to reason that gdp is in large measure, simply the amount of public spending and outstanding loans/yr
And because there’s a 1:1 relationship of gdp to energy use, a marker of co2 emissions output.
He is describing the conditions of a debt deflation spiral for China’s provinces. I don’t think it’s clear how the state can paper over this bubble, although the US and EU are not in better shape (I’ve put a few thoughts to pixels on it). The US economy was powered by similar dynamics by subsidizing home loans and suburban expansion. That Ponzi scheme ran out of steam in the 70s, and every housing crises since has been papered over with more money to float it. 🧵
Suburbia is a Ponzi scheme because the economics of that kind of land use and its maintenance costs are under water (see Strongtowns or urban3 studies). Combine all this with climate ripping up infrastructure globally and the insurance cliff this generates and globally we’re looking at GFC on steroids
Overall however, is the more general eyesore in plain sight: the enormous allocation resources, of human, ecological and mineral capital given over to activities that do nothing to secure human subsistence and long term prospects and prosperity.
All the effort has gone down the hydrocarbon gdp = energy pathway, where our lives are built around open loop waste economic activity rather than self contained local activity.
How are you reacting the Apple store nonsense? It’s relevant to payments on the Patreon app I think. 30% charge is quite nasty, but I don’t know if every one gets soaked no matter what.
