The terminal though, Linux has come a long way. But search how to fix almost anything and the top results still assume terminal, not because there's no GUI way but that's just what lives online. You have to specifically search for a GUI solution to find one, and even then the comment section is half arguing about your distro choice instead of answering the question.

It's honestly the same overwhelming problem as Mastodon. Pick an instance, what the hell is an instance. Pick a distro, and most people coming from Windows don't even know what a distro is. There's a whole middle group between power user and calling IT who will Google a fix and just give up right there.

I love the terminal, it's fast but also fast to destroy something. Regedit is more cryptic and dangerous but it just never shows up at the top of a Google search so it feels safer.

Most of the app gap though, web apps sorted it since devs stopped writing three native versions of everything. Business software is still the exception like you said, and hardware is mostly fine now, though Nvidia is still a damn mess.

Linux is definitely more user friendly once you're in, but the path there is still pretty bumpy for a non technical user. Would love for it to go more mainstream.

I did install Pop!_OS on my father in law's old 2013 Mac though, and other than wrestling with network drivers and writing an rclone backup script he has had 0 complaints.

@mullvadnet just ran a commercial about Chat Control during "Uppesittarkvällen" in front of a huge chunk of Sweden's population.

Spending ad money to warn people about mass surveillance instead of selling VPN subscriptions. This is why I trust you.

Chat Control needs to be stopped. More companies should follow your lead.

@Em0nM4stodon I agree strongly. I however feel the need to point out that racism and sexism are not limited to just one group. Those goes in both directions.

@GrapheneOS is being threatened by French authorities for refusing to add backdoors and they're dealing with coordinated attacks in French media right now. They're pulling out of France entirely, moving all their servers, and fighting off a wave of bullshit one-sided reporting that makes them look like they're helping criminals.

They need us to fight back. Support them however you can, whether that's a dollar, sharing their story, pushing back on the garbage news coverage when you see it, or just telling someone you know about what's happening. All of it matters because they're drowning in attacks from governments and media and bad actors who want them gone.

This is the only Android OS that actually makes me feel like privacy isn't just marketing. They fight for us now they need us to fight for them.

The EU is pushing Chat Control and creating an environment where governments feel empowered to threaten developers into compliance, and if we stay quiet we're letting it happen. Show up for them in whatever way you're able to.

Reinstalled Windows yesterday and holy hell, 5 hours of my life I'll never get back. Not installing my programs or moving files. Just getting past all the hand-holding and features I don't want.

Meanwhile my Linux box took 20 minutes and then minded its own business. I'm done being someone else's product.

That line shuts mouths. It turns every room into a suspect.

I think of a kid who needs a 2 a.m. chat. A friend planning a way out. Someone healing at their own pace. They need doors that close.

Blanket checks are not care. A net at the door teaches silence.

We can protect kids without tearing the doors off the hinges.
