@labellaragassa It's a bunch of tradeoffs. There are acceptable solutions where trust is warranted, but they're less convenient, and require more #SelfHosting skills. How far down the rabbit hole of inconvenience are you willing to go, to satisfy more of your ideals?

@labellaragassa Well I think the brave and principled SelfHosters of the world need **way, way** more #Goose Value afforded to them, as pillars of their respective neighbourhoods, communities, cities, and countries.

@benlockwood A good Computer Scientist could have told you, 25 years ago, that the better pattern is to "pull" information (client pulls info from a server, like say, how it's done in an email client over IMAP). Not "push" it. But did anyone want to listen to that tried and true Wisdom? No. Because everyone became addicted to fondleslabs. It was a cursed idea from the start - Push Notifications - and I actually could have told you so 25 years ago.

@Gargron Would you please talk more about when to use Mute and Block? I offered my own suggestions here:

@LimurianHiro@disabled.social You're welcome. My own personal way of using those buttons: Someone speaks too abusively, or in a denigrating way, making comments aimed at the world (or demographic groups) at large: I mute them. If they come after me specifically, very emotionally enraged, after the tiniest of affrontations (unintentionally caused on my part): Block.

I have a provocative view. It's #ActuallyAutistic people who are willing to go against the grain of the Social norm and push back against "network effects" which eventuate in a psychologically toxic situation of enshittification.

"Network effects" - which eventuate in a psychological dead end, once the Musks, Bezos, etc types of the world monopolize the very fabric of Society - can't be escaped without the help of the #Autistic.

The autistic aren't beholden to the emotional gravity of the "Network Effects" (which are sort of like a "black hole" which is nice in the short term, but becomes a Torment Nexus in the long term) anywhere near as much as Neurotypicals. As an autistic person, would you agree?

@thomasfuchs "Narcissistic Shared Fantasies", all of them. People who are gullible have a share of the blame here, in that they believed in these fantasies on an emotional basis without doing any due diligence into facts.

    @autistics
There used to be a forum about #Autism called "Wrongplanet". It's been offline for several months now. It had a huge number of interesting threads, all the way back to about 2012.

One of the best threads was a "Megathread", where each #ActuallyAutistic forum member contributed the best boiled-down advice they could muster, for the other Autistic people - **how to understand Neurotypicals**.

It took me days to read it. There was a ton of good advice, which hit me like a ton of bricks. I saved my favorite posts, and made a .pdf out of it; *straight-up copying and pasting* - even leaving grammar errors intact. I made a nice .pdf out of it, formatting it for a phone screen. It's all I have left of that forum to remember it by.

**If you are easily provoked, and are triggered easily by words which you don't think are politically correct, don't read it!!**

If you'd like to read the .pdf, here it is:

@soatok Not crazy, but rather awesome. There's a vid (apology for Youtube) to think over carefully on this - the pirates in the past set an interesting precedent. Apparently pirates had a clever way of splitting up looted treasure: 2 shares for the captain, 1.5 shares for some middle-management like positions - the carpenter, medic and quartermaster - then all "normal" pirates got one share each. Similarly the product/system/AI you speak of could divvy the "treasure" in this way. Leaders get something more for their work, but it's not crazy-more.
Why is this so awesome? Because the lowliest pirate who swabs the deck looks at his one share of the treasure, and compares it to the captain's 2 shares - it's a 33% - 66% difference in that relative comparison. This is a psychologically tolerable split for most people.

    *Unpopular opinions:* :comfy_blob_cat:
The #Internet needs a "Great Reboot", IMHO, where:
    - #Mastodon is the new IRC, X, Threads, Bluesky, LinkedIn, and Facebook
    - #Deltachat is the new email and two-way email mailing list
    - #RSS is the new one-way email mailing list
    - static content generators (say, #Hugo, #Jekyll, etc) are the new web CMS'. No CDN, as they're so lightweight.
    - #XMPP is the new #Discord - and no encryption is used in groups
    - #Flarum is the new goto for a persisting, searchable support forum
    - #Signal is for encrypted 1-to-1 chats and encrypted group chats (when none of the above suffice), as they get the encryption right in a very reliable way *for the group chat* (despite being a centralized service).

@soatok I, for one, would be highly impressed if you added E2EE to #Mastodon DMs. No small feat!! And that xwing encryption algorithm would get proven as an implementation.

@badnetmask I finished the #Ansible tutorials. I can see how it's a great idea when there are many servers. It uses yaml as a sort of esperanto, especially suited to when it's a heterogeneous shop with multiple distros (who all do things a little differently). #OpenSource #Linux

I also tried #Rocky Linux for the first time. Had far fewer conveniences when administering on the command line, as compared to #Debian. The #nginx package especially annoyed me.

I appear to be incapable of any banger-grade toots. I'm tempted to blame it on the #autism. Have any of my fellow Autistics had any banger toots to speak of? Like are we all generally bad at it, I'm wondering? Is there some sort of measurable banger toot drought we are all doomed to suffer, as our lowly lot in the #fediverse? Maybe one of us is a scientist and can measure this, just saying. @autistics

@pathfinder @autistics I've talked to an acquaintance who is a schoolteacher in #HongKong . Their education system is so far advanced that they *already know* who all the autistic kids are in the classrooms by the time they're 6 years old. This friend knows who each autistic kid is already, complete with the training on how to keep an eye out for their special needs. #HongKong has blown the doors off Western education in countries like #Canada, when it comes to #Autism awareness.

@nina_kali_nina I've been using #XMPP for the last year or so, wondering if the halcyon ICQ days of yore are still to be had.

After testing it with several friends connecting to my own self-hosted #Prosody server, here's what I found:

    - Yes it all works, on all XMPP clients. But MacOS/iPadOS/iOS clients are not all that mature at this time. The #Linux (#Gajim, despite no video or audio calls) and #Android (#Conversations) XMPP clients are the best, IMHO. Always favor those, I say, and they are confidently installable and reliable today.
    - Yes, use OMEMO encryption on personal chats. But when it comes to group chats, OMEMO is not necessarily the right move.
    - If you don't need privacy in an XMPP group, then don't create a private group, but rather a _public_ group (the safer choice for reliability of message delivery). No OMEMO is possible in a public group, and the messages propagating around will be reliable, even to clients who vanish and re-appear after prolonged absences.
    - If you really need OMEMO encryption in a group chat, create a _private_ group, not a public group. **Clients who vanish from the group for prolonged periods may miss out on some of the messages when they return (say, a few weeks later)**.
    - I kept a wiki with several more quirks noted, which came up, and felt confusing and frustrating to my (non-geek) friends using XMPP.

As to your Apple-ecosystem-confined friends, at this moment in time, maybe talk to them 1:1 in #Fluffychat/Matrix, which affords encryption, and is all #OpenSource, like everything above. (Groups in #Matrix have a track record of failing for everybody in them very badly every 2 or 3 years or so.)

@stevefenton The vibe coding can just code that right into the app: a bespoke and integrated version control. Why learn an existing system like git? The point of vibe coding is to avoid learning anything unnecessary. :blob_cat_giggle:
