Off the top of my head
- Full admin control - setup exactly how you want for your own needs
- Set up moderation in a way that suits your own needs
- Full control over other instances it federates with
- Less system overhead and (potentially) faster loading
- Use your own domain name if identity is important
- Not being vulnerable to instances suddenly shutting down or being defederated by other instances
- Full control of own data / media
- Can run from a home server
- Can mess around with instance's code and customize
- can integrate it with other software / services you run on the same server
- self reliance - long term stability
There's probably more things
There are downsides though, of course needing server admin knowledge, but a big one is that it can take some time for your instance to find other instances - but you can set up relays to help with that.

@dalias@hachyderm.io I run a single user instance and upkeep is very minimal. Perhaps I'm a little more savvy with things, and likely also less of a target - but I added a publicly curated block list, and follow the #fediblock tag, adding to it when needed.
And running your own instance isn't a horrible idea and that's not good advice, sorry, as the fediverse works better with many small instances, than a few bigger ones. Sure there is downside, but what I feel would be better is that if the instances had some kind of inbuilt block list that could be subscribed to, and which auto updates. -

@sufferforme@mstdn.party @selzero@syzito.xyz I personally feel that I know exactly what is happening here, though of course I am no expert, but it does fit Trump's psychological profile perfectly. Look at this from the perspective that Trump does not actually hold any deep ideology or real loyalty to any political party... only to himself. With Trump's driver being his deep need for admiration, and who is drawn to admired charismatic people - who in turn he wants to admire him. Here, he's actually seeing himself in Mamdami, even if that is a self projection reflecting back with distortion. But, It's the exact same reasons he was how he behaved with Putin (etc..).

As an autistic person, I can often rely on alt text to understand memes. The thing is, memes expect its context to be automatically understood. Yet it is context that I can struggle with if it isn't presented. Therefore, sometimes memes can just look like nonsense to me at first.
It isn't until reading the description for blind people that the context is explained. So, I would argue strongly that alt text for accessibility goes beyond just those that can't physically see.

When I was at school in the early 90's, we went through a period where schools were so underfunded that some staff had to double their roles.
My class got the school Headmaster teaching us for History, who had not directly taught pupils in decades.
I remember our class going through the details of how Hitler arose to power over a whole school term. This would have been unusual even at the time, but our teacher was someone who had taught at a Grammar School in the 70's and had a very old fashioned teaching style.
Everyone was silent in his class, sat straight at their desks facing the front, afraid to blink. The teacher stood in front of the class, a broad shouldered older man, with a bold top and glasses on the end of his nose. He spoke in a slow monotone voice, simultaneously writing his words on the blackboard with chalk.
The class sat in silence mindlessly copying the words into notebooks with a pen. Nobody soaked in a single fact, with my most vivid memory being when I laughed out loud at the phrase "Herman the German", which got me in trouble.
I then went through my teens and twenties uninterested in political history, but I would eventually hyper focus on learning about the rise of Hitler with horrified fascination.
In fact, over the years, I would go through the Napoleonic Wars and the two World Wars, and in between, seeing how each event lead on to the next and reignited an ideology.
It's not until you really learn all of this History do you realize just how lucky most people alive today are to have lived in a time with 80 years of relative world peace and stability.
Right now we are in such a time of ignorance, where so many people either don't know that history, or have instead filled their heads with an "alternative" version, which shapes their belief systems in the opposite direction.
These people just don't seem to know where that belief system and those same patterns in history inevitably lead.
They don't know what they are asking for.
They don't understand that it will eventually not all just be something on their screens, but all around them and actually be their new world and what they experience.
They do not understand that they are asking for misery and death.

#introduction I'm Shye, a humanoid like alien spider who fell to earth a few apocalypses ago. When I'm not hanging out in the dark corners of old buildings, I like to draw, make, write, design, score and code. I'm fascinated by consciousness and the magical gift of abstract thought. An ability to create original concepts and intangible ideas, turning them into something that exists and which can be experienced by others. Here, I post about my creative projects, with random thoughts in between.
