If anyone is wondering what the price of using an alternative to Substack is for my (rather humble in terms of audience size) newsletter … gulp. Anyone know of other good, preferably lower price, options?
Are there any RSS Readers that are trying to integrate ActivityPub too? Pondering the glut of email newsletters in our inboxes these days, and wondering if we are due for an RSS Reader renaissance, except with a fediverse twist this time…
Came across this fediverse connector from Ghost CMS to Mastodon, by @quigs. I’m interested in somehow connecting my newsletter at Cybercultural.com (currently on Substack) to the fediverse. Not immediately, but am looking into feasibility. Quigs, are you still working on this project? #Ghost#newsletter
It’s ok to hold two opposing opinions in your mind at the same time, if the larger truth is more important. I don’t trust Zuck / Meta, but I also want them to federate with Mastodon. Even if they play power games later on, you can always jump to an instance that blocks them. The power is with you, the “user”, and that is what the web started out as and always should be. Besides, if it all turns to custard just start an indie blog and/or sail the world like the Scuttlebutt guy from NZ.
This week Threads has begun fediverse connection and opened up to Europe. In the mythical fight between Zuck and Musk, I think Zuck just put Musk into a headlock…
2/3 "This will be a write-only experience to start, meaning that the team’s Threads posts will be available on Fediverse platforms like Mastodon, but reactions and replies from Mastodon will not be available on the Threads app at this time. To ensure that this is a good experience, we’ll only federate top-level posts and self-replies. Certain post types, like polls and voice threads, will not be supported at this time."
1/3 I just received this note from Meta, which I thought I'd share here as I won't have time to write it up as an article:
"I wanted to share that today, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads is taking the first step towards adopting open standards and integrating with the Fediverse. Beginning today, Threads posted by a few members of the team, including Adam Mosseri, will be viewable on other Fediverse platforms so we can learn and expand the experience."
3/3 "Our long-term vision remains full interoperability with the Fediverse. We believe this will give people more choice when it comes to reaching new audiences, expanding their communities, and better discovering and joining public discussions on topics they care about."
Also, this from Meta's rep on a W3C mailing list: "Ben Savage here from Meta. Just a few quick points: This test is not yet started (debugging some last technical issues together with Mastodon engineers) Only a few accounts will be a part of this initial test. My Threads account (https://www.threads.net/@btsavage) will be one of those and I'm happy to make test posts to help people who want to work on Threads integration. We will share details about how to test soon, once we iron these issues out. --Ben"
