In his book a culture of star-faring traders are pitted against a stratified fascist culture with castes. He examines the blind spots of each culture but sends a clear message that trades have a kind of moral high ground.

He doesn't explicitly examine or seem to understand WHY.

Traders must be ... tolerant. At some deeper level they want the pie to expand. They want to make money not tell you how to live. They can't derive any profit or pleasure from simple control or domination.

Why is a big city with lots of open markets connecting people around the world a good bet for a safe place to live for your controversial artist, religious minority, or anyone who cares about personal freedom?

Because keeping the system working requires negotiation and compromise. The more people you can live with, and make peace with the bigger the market.

The market itself can be full of perversion and horrors. It's the imperative to cooperate that's valuable.

I didn't know this existed, but it's a gadget that helps you get up off the floor. Would have loved to have rented one of these a few years ago when my leg was still healing.

Anyway I wanted to share it so more people know this exists. It's a few 100 bucks and there are a few models. Not linking any particular one since I have not tried them, but I love the idea.

If some of those pop-up boxes simply asked me for $1 (no subscription) rather than to turn off my adblocker they might earn a dollar now and then. Instead I simply … leave.

“Pay us $1 for one day without ads. Flat fee.” Give it a try. Guilting people to turn off software that protects our mental health and happiness is slimy.

She fell in with a bad crowd and keeps “ending up” being around when terrible things are going down. But she has sunkissed memories of a more innocent time— playing pointless higher dimensional games with her silly little sister Pure Mathematics and making Computer Science so frustrated she’d squeal and try to wrestle her.

@mina @jayalane @inthehands She & Computer Science are constantly squabbling over ‘who carries on mother’s legacy best.’ They are incredibly similar in temperament (often confused with each other as children.) Statistics has tried to enter the argument saying she too carrie’s on the legacy— but, her two younger sisters just laugh at her. Pure Mathematics is very fond of playing pranks. It can be a little exhausting putting up with her.

The first time Fine Arts came to the house for the holidays with Computer Science, Economics surprised her in the guest bathroom and bit her. She and Computer Science had to spend most of the holiday at the emergency room getting rabies and tetanus shots.

Computer Science finally opened up about her childhood and it made them a lot closer.

Sometimes people lament the fragmentation of news sources. They long for the days when everyone just watched the same few networks. And yes. ABC news in 1987 was less extreme than Fox News is today in many ways... but I think we've blocked out a lot of the nonsense that *everyone* watched and took as gospel. For example: that "crack babies" exist and were going to cause a crime wave. Really the whole way they reported on drugs..."The Gays" (exotic and disturbing people) DIVORCE and Single Moms.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s due mostly to ominous news stories I remember as a kid being very sad that all of my friends with divorced parents would have to live lives of crime and be criminals, or otherwise bad people.

This, of course, didn't happen. And the "divorce epidemic" ended, now people get married later, get married less often, but are more likely to stay together.

The horde of "latch key kids" failed to ruin society and no one ever talks about it.

I'm saving this for the quadrilaterals unit. Although, I do think we define "sides" to be "straight lines" which has its own problems as an undefined term. Still I like this.

Could probably market "meat flavored water" ... for cats. Anyone want to invest? We could have a whole like of flavors... with and without pulp.

A south bronx bus stop has to be one of the last places on earth you’d see a MAGA hat. But, if I ride out to LI it’s totally different. Apparently one of my coworkers sees this crazy MAGA theme car complete with a life sized trump statue waving on the back— she says it used to have Pence too… but he’s been removed. And the owner doesn’t seem inclined to make a Vance statue for some reason.

Vance isn't presidential material. He's too ... peevish and invested in projecting intelligence in particular.

He needs people to think he's smart and doesn't care if they think he's mean, or a jerk while getting there.

Does a one-eyed man who needs glasses need "glasses" or does he just need glass?
