Did the ancient Egyptians see any humor in this? This is Nehebkau, the primordial snake god... often drawn as a snake with people feet. More than anything else it's things like this that let me know that I just don't understand their mythology or culture much at all.

My husband does his Chinese lessons every Saturday morning, and Pica, our cat always tries to join in, which his teacher find hilarious. I guess she sees him struggling to make noises correctly and she's like "pfffth this is simple. I can make noises. Here I will do it for you: raw mrow raw! See? Like that!"

If you got to pick a computer model and OS for middle school students what would you pick?

I understand some of the reasons SO many schools choose chromebooks. Low cost, durability..

Drop a macbook it might break. The chromebook works just as well before and after being dropped. Which is to say they work like they have been dropped right out of the box.

Touch pads are unresponsive, touch screen is annoying. I kind of loathe them.

But, designing computers for children isn't glamourous.

Designing computers for children ought to be glamorous, celebrated, You will shape a generation. It's not fun, or easy at all.

Frankly, even more than the software the poor quality of the touch pad, and the jitteriness and hypersensitivity of the touch screens on most models made for school markets are making a whole generation hate laptops.

And when young people hate laptops they become phone only computer users. It's a dead end.

Say mean things about Apple all you want, their input devices have never caused me to notice them. And that is *success* I have never thought about the touch pad on my laptops ONCE.

I'm so glad this idea was rejected at our school. They need to type! And those keyboard cases are NOT the same.

But worse, understanding the file system on an iPad is challenging for *me* it's designed to make you not think about it. I know I sound like an old lady but the youths need to know where their files are!

Well I just mailed 140 postcards to PA. 60 more to go. All these people BETTER vote. The postcards are very cute and have stickers and stamps and shiny gold stars.

If you get a GOTV postcard you can make so many people happy by posting a photo of it online. I think there are like 100k going out just through this one group. All handwritten.

Wow it transports 20 people. ooooh I have an idea, what if we connected a bunch of these together... in a long chain and put them on tracks to make them more energy efficient (and to meet power needs) then ran them along the most popular transportation corridors in major cities! They could even go in tunnels in places like NYC to reduce traffic!

These don't bother me as much as the "cat skeletons" that have bone ears... or the human skeleton I saw once with... with ... *bone boobs*

We fly her out to some lil bunker with computers and nonsense, and say:

"OK Maggie here you go: steer the hurricane! Where do you want it to go?"

Hand her an X-box controller.

I don't think those of us who are Christian understand how lavishly Christianity-centric your typical calendar and days selected to be "Holidays" is at most schools and companies.

There is always time not just to be unbothered with work on Christian holidays, but also to travel.

We could call this traditional, or practical given more people celebrate these holidays. And then there are the issues of synching across organizations. It's not an easy problem.

But try to imagine not being off on Christmas? Or just getting IDK a half day? (Provided you work at a place that even has holidays at all which is ANOTHER issue. )

Reading "A Deepness in the Sky" by Vernor Vinge. It's pretty good, but is a little over excited about the magical power of markets and trade. (He gets a little preachy on this point and it's tiresome, without ever being so wrong that I felt the need to put it down.)

Like Asimov, Vinge seems to subscribe to the notion that a science like psychohistory ought to be possible. He shows us humans thousands of years in the future with choices informed by thousands of years of human history.

In his book a culture of star-faring traders are pitted against a stratified fascist culture with castes. He examines the blind spots of each culture but sends a clear message that trades have a kind of moral high ground.

He doesn't explicitly examine or seem to understand WHY.

Traders must be ... tolerant. At some deeper level they want the pie to expand. They want to make money not tell you how to live. They can't derive any profit or pleasure from simple control or domination.
