@kaia If they set aside 1M, that's 1M that's not generating money in whatever they think the next sure bet is.

I'm not justifying it - what they're doing is financially destructive and I'm more of a long-term investments person, but I kinda get why it seems obvious to cash out and yet they don't.

@sun yeah, good to not get too excited about things that are hard to control like that. I'm still trying to prepare for it to give myself the best chance, but it might blow up in my face - who knows.

For me, I don't really look at retirement as stopping doing things though. I look at it as "can try doing something you want to do that might not pan out", which I'd like to try some of my own things at least once before I die.

@sun @arcana Yeah I saw a video of this recently, it was very cute! They asked things like where the person was from and what Japanese food they like, and had cards with pictures to point to in case they had trouble communicating.

@arcana @sun Yeah, it's one of the few things culturally that I genuinely like here in America. I'm pretty reserved so I don't think I'd have trouble turning it off, but the opportunity to practice Japanese with some small talk sounds pleasant to me.

@sun My Japanese friend tells me that in Japan people don't usually hold small talk, so that sounds like a nice surprise!

@sun My experience from them is:

1. They do shitty fomo practices where you have to buy many versions of the same game to "complete" a thing. They really benefit from whales.
2. They don't keep their promise of forever physical, they have in the past released games that need day one patches which kinda defeats the point of their stated goal of preservation.
3. Did you buy something? Get fucked and wait literally 6mo minimum with little in the way of updates about the thing you bought.

I don't like their business practices, but I go through them when it's something I really want. They really try to fomo you though, it feels slime-y.

@sun Also, they don't help with the scalpers that's for sure, other companies do things like take orders over a period of time for limited releases. But everything LRG does is there to make you buy stuff asap because it's "limited", it's in the business practice. So while yes they don't cause the scalpers, they definitely allow such a market to exist.

@sun pretty much. Unfortunately I still haven't migrated my professional accounts away from GMail for mail, too much hassle. But my personal accounts don't use it any more.

@lain I liked their older stuff, but I think as they went on they became a little annoying, personally.

@sun Yeah when we get into ASM that's where I start to struggle to find interest in reading the code. Even some tricky highly-optimized C code starts to get a bit uncomfortable to me. But you can really do some hellish things in C.

@sun that makes sense, largely static screens I guess. Anyways, I'm glad some people do stuff like this because it's interesting to see.

@sun I'm not very familiar with GBA programming, I've programmed a DS game, which I was told the 2D mode acted quite a bit like a GBA, though I'm not sure how true that is. But I only did pretty basic stuff with it.

I'll have to watch the video you shared about it, but my first impression is that the throughput of updating it before a redraw would be tough to manage on a GBA. But if that's what they're using, I guess they found a way.
