asking on behalf of someone: what's a good server/community on Mastodon for non-techie people of color who want a timeline that isn't just a bunch of white techies talking tech?

My mastodon circle is depressingly white, so I'm having a hard time answering that :(

this LLM shit is worse than the cryptocurrency nonsense because a lot of otherwise reasonable techies who saw right through the technolibertarian shit of blockchain stuff are falling head over heels for fancy expensive markov chains.

Re: SVB, I’m mostly just sad for folks who are at very real risk/likelihood of not getting paid, and potentially losing their jobs over this.

Say what you well about Silicon Valley tech, VCs, SVB as a fraternal order, etc… but the ones who are gonna suffer the worst effects aren’t the clownish founders or evil VCs. It’s workers and their families.

I can't believe how much of my pre #rust life I spent with only numbers that could be negative, instead of "this will absolutely not go below 0".

I should really consider starting to use the NonZero* types, too, but I've never really had an obvious opportunity to...

@ehashman what does "stagnation" mean for a community whose goal wasn't corporate uptake to begin with?

Honestly a lot of the conversations happening about mastodon and how it perpetuates and exacerbates oppression might feel stressful but they’re showing exactly what sets this space apart from corporate walled gardens: we have the *opportunity* to build out the things our communities need, the way our communities need them.

The thing is—that actually takes work, and we’ve gotta do it, and we’ve gotta recognize the folks that HAVE been doing it for a long time now, right in this space. I, for one, don’t want to see their efforts wasted.

And tbh I really think mastodon itself (the specific software, as maintained by Garg et al) ain’t it, and will likely never be it. But I’m thankful that it’s helped bootstrap these conversations and give us a glimpse of what could still be if we can manage to get it there.
