@nonlinear yes, the instance I am on supports Markdown formatting. I don’t fully understand how it works, but apparently the Mastodon (and Akkoma, in my case) server supports limited formatting in the post body with a subset of HTML which is simple enough to be automatically converted to plain text for clients that do not support formatted text.

If you configure your user settings to allow Markdown formatting, the server will automatically translate your posts to HTML and store that on the server. My previous Mastodon instance supported raw HTML formatting, but it would strip away unsupported HTML tags. My current instance only allows plaintext or Markdown.

@aral when I was growing up in the US, you won’t believe how many times I heard a conversation that concluded with something like this:

“Say what you want about how much of an asshole he is, he is still rich, and you at least gotta respect that.”

I used to accept that as “wisdom,” now I see this as the product of decades of concerted capitalist propaganda. Unfortunately, I would guess the majority of Americans still accept that as wisdom.

And he is definitely a most dangerous fascist. What a society we live in where we allow, even encourage, such mentally unstable people to be within arms reach of the levers of power.

viz Haskell being a great imperative language, in the past two weeks it is with some irony I have come to terms with lisp being a great lazy functional language so I guess I like those two things now, after years of berating Haskell

@catsalad one thing I couldn’t stand about the movie “Alien” was how they didn’t quarantine the guy who was exposed to the alien egg.

Because alien biomes evolved separately from the biome on Earth, chances are pretty good that bacteria or viruses from other planets are completely unknown to our immune systems, and so our body would have no natural defense against them. Every alien virus or bacteria is probably extremely deadly to us. Also, it is just very easy to contaminate an alien biome with microbes from Earth, and NASA builds landers in clean rooms to prevent this kind of contamination.

You would think a ship like that in the movie “Alien” would know at least that much. The lack of common sense of the characters in the film made it very difficult for me to feel any empathy with them.

There are three ways to edit text on a #Linux or #Unix like systems: 🫣

@nixCraft a superposition of Emacs and Vim. Mostly Emacs, but I occasionally set it to Vim emulation, usually when I am riding in a car or on a train, and it is easier to edit one-handed with Vim keybindings.

This is my article on how to solve practical programming problems in the Scheme language using monads, a concept originally introduced to the world of software engineering by the Haskell programming language. Because the Scheme language is not purely a Lambda Calculus computer the way Haskell is, and does not do static type checking, monads are not as necessary to Scheme programmers as they are to Haskell programmers, but can still come in handy.

Monads let you code procedures (without using macros) that do not use strictly procedural programming semantics. They let you model alternative semantics like concurrent programming, or lazy evaluation. I go over two examples: of a procedural but monadic pretty printer, and list monad implementation which demonstrate a simple concurrent programming semantics.

@HelloIt_sMe45 Emacs, because you can control so much of Linux with just text (code), and Emacs takes care of program editing, note taking, file management, process management and job control, terminal emulation, terminal multiplexing, documentation browsing, e-mail, RSS feeds, Mastodon feeds, and the text-only web. And all of it is configurable and scriptable with a single programming language (Emacs Lisp).

Emacs is not an editor, it is a full app platform like the web, but simper and easier to setup and with direct access to your operating systems files and processes.
