I keep seeing people pearl clutching over the Proton news from 404 media today. They got a legally binding court order. When you sign up for the service, they’re pretty explicit that’s if there’s a legal court order from Swiss authorities that compels them to turn data over they will. This went through the Swiss legal system. If this is incompatible with your threat model, then look elsewhere.
Yeah it went to the FBI in the end, but it was all done through Swiss law. Not just American law.
@mekkaokereke tbh. Free school lunch program is a huge amount of why I didn’t starve as a kid. I was on the program for most of my life, and am eternally grateful for its existence.
@soatok to finish the point of the rant. That’s what, 6 years of use? The core experience didn’t change at all in that time. It moves at a glacial pace. The bugs didn’t get squished at all. At least the ones that matter. Idk why people love it so much it’s just plain bad.
@soatok not stanning matrix here, its awful to use and has been for a super long time. It’s even worse to admin though. But what’s surprising to me is that people are willing to bat for software that’s that bad for so long?
I got on matrix in 2018 with some friends, and it was riddled with usability nightmares. Not to mention the UX nightmare of trying to use encrypted rooms. I took the server over in 2021, and ran it until late 2024.
Never again. I’ve ran a lot of servers over the years but matrix has been by far the jankiest and the worst to run.
@Viss ah dang. Maybe next time. We have some folks here who’ve never been to Vegas before and I tried to bring them to the strip to check it out. Then someone set up a reservation at the tiki bar and there I went!
@ttntm sounds like quite the fall from grace. It’s been a few years since I was using it, which was before they started putting the AI summaries in there. It was decent software, I just don’t think the “blocky” structure of it scaled well over time.
