    Got to love that the #Matrix protocol is so computationally expensive it costs millions of euros in public funding to run. How much more millions of euros would they be saving if they would off-the-shelf #XMPP servers instead?

    @dansup Why can't I explore what's on loops.video without registering first?

    @codeDude There is a service which gives you standard XMPP addresses for Matrix rooms and users: https://archon.im/arianet/matrix-homeserver/services/

    It's sometimes very slow to respond though. I couldn't join a channel via @gajim last time because there is a 10s timeout for the server to respond (but it did respond eventually).

    Some Matrix rooms are also connected to IRC. In this case it's best to join the IRC channel via Biboumi: https://joinjabber.org/tutorials/gateways/irc/

      IRC Gateway
      IRC is a kind of chat protocol. It is focused towards group communication, yet allows one-to-one communication. Unlike Jabber, IRC users of one network/server can only communicate with channels and nicks of that network/server. In IRC realm, channels are group-chats (like MUC in Jabber) and nicks are user-identifiers (like JIDs in Jabber). To learn more about IRC, please visit IRC-Help. Here, you'll see how to connect to IRC from your Jabber account, via an IRC transport for Jabber, called Biboumi.

    @Menel @aardjon @trashserver Indeed the message came from sebastian@wiuwiu.de instead of the usual wiuwiu.de for public announcements. But I'm pretty certain I remember sebastian@wiuwiu.de to be the admin. Another indication is that the registrations have been closed now.

      wiuwiu.de | A German XMPP Server
      The modern and German XMPP server (Jabber server) places great emphasis on privacy and data protection. Create a free XMPP account and communicate securely. The server is located in Germany.

    @kariboka @pidgin I know of https://conversejs.org/ . You can also join IRC channels by using the public XMPP <-> IRC gateways: https://joinjabber.org/tutorials/gateways/irc/

    @bobdobberson @jason123santa My personal issue with Matrix is that I don't think it's a good idea to use products of venture capital startups that essentially re-invent a basic internet standard. Projects like Matrix are poison for interoperability.

    @bobdobberson @jason123santa The Matrix project could have been an XMPP client. Now there is no way to send an end-to-end encrypted message or to call someone from a standard compliant XMPP client.
