Meta's recent statements herald a deleterious shift in their products towards even greater toxicity and harassment of minorities - they now unabashedly assume to follow far-right politics.
The least we could do was not to federate with them.
Now we need to redouble our efforts to offer viable alternatives to our loved ones still stuck on these platforms, despite their disgust and anger!
🌏 Introducing https://mapstodon.space, a new Mastodon instance for the mapping & geospatial community 🗺

Captivating post from 2021 by @pluralistic where he describes in detail his writing and publishing process.
"20 years in, blogging is still a curious mix of both technical, literary and graphic bodgery, with each day's work demanding the kind of technical minutuae we were told would disappear with WYSIWYG desktop publishing."
"D’abord, il a dissous l’Assemblée nationale, pariant que jamais la gauche ne parviendrait à s’unir : raté. Ensuite, il s’est dit qu’évidemment ce Nouveau Front populaire (NFP) ne remporterait pas les élections législatives : raté. Puis, il a tout misé sur une mésentente de cette alliance qui, c’est sûr, n’arriverait pas à s’accorder sur un candidat pour Matignon : raté. Ne restait alors qu’une option : rayer le NFP de la carte. Tout simplement."
Meta is allegedly sharing Whatsapp data to the IDF...
"Israel is killing people based on being in the same Whatsapp group as a suspected militant. Where are they getting this data? Is WhatsApp sharing it?"
"An independent emissions tracker, using a network of 300 satellites and artificial intelligence. The tool can now monitor emissions from more than 352 million sites from 10 industries."
@floledermann Thanks for investigating Florian! This is quite a regrettable IT decision indeed. Hope there is room for a change of policy at your university. Tagging @mastohost so he's aware of the issue.
@eldang@eldang@weirder.earth Hi Eldan, thanks for the suggestion. At first sight the new behavior seems less convenient indeed. Regarding mapstodon.space, as we are running a @mastohost managed instance, we unfortunately don't have the hand to install a patch. I'll let Hugo for Masto.host take notice and make his decision (a patch might involve more work on the admin/update side and be hard to deal with later!). Also: the url brings a 404 error, maybe the resource has been moved?
@Dragons8mycat I second @jcarlson's suggestion here. Could you please check your preferences and see if there's any filter in place? The instance recently upgraded to Mastodon 4, there might be glitches. Cc @mastohost
