As I feared, Fangs of Fortune is dropping the plot left and right from episode 25 on. The crying scenes are reaching near parodistic levels. And yet I still love it, because its images are so stunningly beautiful and the whole cast is playing their hearts out. And it did inspire me to bring out my oil pastels again after a long art-ing dry-spell. (The painting is still in WIP stage) #cdrama
@liztai@AnnaAnthro@Sollenbum Personally, I think it's good that everybody has different tastes and likes different things, otherwise the creative landscape would be very small and boring! ^^ I don't really care if a drama is popular or not, I'm only starting to notice these things atm. I go after what visuals I like and if I think the story has potential most. What I like about Fangs of Fortune are the stunning visuals, and they haven't slaughtered the story... yet... :P I think the acting is good quality, not top scores from everyone but most are really good. Costume & make-up people did a REALLY good job, I love the look. Except maybe for Zhuo Yi Chen's Rhinestone Cowboy outfit. 😆 I love how the magic works and how they made it look. They did invest wisely in the special effects and that's quite rare. ^^ And, a thing that I find really rare in drama series is how deeply affectionate the whole group acts towards each other (except Miss Brooding Archeress -.-) I wonder where they're taking this. But... I'm only at episode 15... plenty more to possibly pour it all down the drain... or make it fabulous. It's always kind of a lucky bag situation with cdrama, I found. :P
@liztai@AnnaAnthro@Sollenbum Oh nooooo! 😆 You can resist the moody goth Great Yao?! And the cute half mountain god? 😱 You're stronger than me! 😛 I've quite fallen for the whole ensemble I think. ^^ Except child prodigy doctor and grumpy archeress.
Sometimes, when my favourite Chinese drama shows get too intense, I need a show that I'm not as invested in as a "break" - that was "Are you the One?" for me. The beginning of the story was so far fetched, I rather watched this with more of a detached interest. Unexpectedly, around episode 20, it got really good. 😆 I really like Liu Miantang's character. She's not the innocent little flower that got harmed by the deception of the prince... quite the opposite, surprisingly. And even if I know, in the end she will probably take him back, I like her intelligent and capable ways fighting for her independence. Some of the secondary characters are also very well written & portrayed, Shi Xueji for example, whose fate is quite a deep reflection on the boundaries women are subjected to and how it's not easy to break free, even if one tries one's best. #cdrama#chinesedrama
@JillsJoy Are you watching on the app or on the web? I had some trouble with their app a while ago, but after 1 or 2 updates it seems to be better (overall their app isn't great though 😕 ).
@liztai Hehe, I think it's good that we all have different tastes. It would be boring without spirited discussions! 😆 What irks you about it, if I may ask? ^^
Yep, it happened, I'm in love with Go East. A Shu and Yuan Mo are too cute together. ^^ It's also refreshing that for once, when someone asks something, the other answers straightforward and not with 3 layers of misdirections. 😆 #cdrama#chinesedrama
If you've watched all episodes of Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty and are looking for something a little similar, have a look at Go East. It's honestly really good! Similar structure, a little more on the humorous side (yet, looking at the opening titles, drama *is* coming). And Tan Jian Ci in a comedic role is absolutely brilliant. #cdrama#chinesedrama
Still absolutely loving Legend of Zhuohua. I'm getting to the last third and this main couple... so good. 😍 Trust & respect. So well written. And performed. #cdrama#chinesedrama
I'm majorly confused... AvenueX and other reviewers say "Love's Rebellion" isn't dubbed, yet the first episode I watched was very heavily dubbed to the point where the lip-sync was about 1 sec off (which is a looong time in dubbing)... what's going on there? Also, the voice recording sounded like they took no care at all about spatial setting - the ML was standing far from the camera but sounded like he was speaking directly into the viewers' ears... yes, I do have good speakers. Weird. #cdrama
@liztai I'll always recognise the Monkey King everywhere ^^ He was one of my Chinese culture first loves ^^ And I recognised the Eight Immortals because AvenueX was talking about them in a video I watched recently. ^^
Episode 26 and I still *cannot* stand the women bickering among each other plotlines in The Double. I thought it had stopped, but now they're going in deep again. And they're really so, so generic. It drags down the main storyline, which is actually quite good. #cdrama#chinesedrama
@liztai One of my unrealistic dreams is to work for one of Chinese fantasy dramas' costume designers... especially Chen Tong Xun or Han Guang Ren. I'd stitch embroidery until my fingers bleed for this. 😅
@liztai Oh! Thank you for these hints! I'm currently learning too, and I didn't know Mandarin Companion and MandarinBean! This looks like exactly what I need to unlock more vocabulary.
I'm slowly warming up to "The Double" (from episode 16 or 17 on) - but I still don't like that most of the women are depicted as viciously bickering and being nothing more than intrigue delivering mechanisms or comic relief. I really like both main actress and actor, they're doing a good job with what the script gave them. Would love some more intelligent quipping between them though, as I enjoy these scenes most. #cdrama#chinesedrama
