I am actually looking forward to quote-boosts on Mastodon as there is a lot I'd like to forward but would add either a CW or hashtag so that people's filters work with it.
That was exhausting but really good. Also, there will be a lot of talks I'll need to catch up with later online. Thank you #fosdem#fosdem2025 and thank you #socialwebfosdem
Okay so I did #fosdem on hard(ish) mode today as my phone stopped working on the way to ULB (now using the backup phone that I had left at the hotel). Which also means I could not ping anyone, and for dev room changes had to follow handwritten ball point pen instructions scribbled over the original signs (no companion app or nav). Thank you everyone who helped today and thank you @evan for being my Fediphone when I needed it in a pinch :)
@morph the Mastodon interface seems to have support for partial string matching (which is neat) but that can also end up with accidental over-filtering. And I do like that there is timing and expiry. But now I am wondering about easier/smarter filter options.
Is there a term for when someone takes the extra effort (via deliberate misspellings/obfuscations, posting screenshots, things like that) to bypass user-created filters or blocks? It seems to fall somewhere around spam or engagement bait but neither of those are exactly what it is.
@anna I use a walking cane at conferences and have lower vision (astigmatism and peripheral blindness). I am also having trouble understanding the map on screen and already know I wouldn't be able to read it properly onsite with my phone (I think I have tried to use it before). @johanvdw if you are interested I can show you in person some of the issues in getting around at FOSDEM and especially what happens when using a cane in the crowd. It won't be exactly the same as Anna as we ... @garrett
This whole Jack Dorsey doing a keynote at FOSDEM thing is kind of weird. He's listed in the talk title and description for Sunday 12:00 room Janson, his company (Block) is one of the sponsors, but he's not actually on the list of speakers for this year. https://archive.fosdem.org/2024/schedule/speakers/
@killyourfm yeah, really it kind of is. Yep, records. Some of them were signed- but even though I don't have them anymore I still have the memory of having them signed :) But I really like that I can listen to (almost) anything just about anywhere.
Not to say I haven't collected a bunch of thing here, I'm actually going through things right now to streamline and get better organized.
@killyourfm very cool! I did the same in 2016 (to Germany from California). I left behind my books (shelves and boxes full), thousands of records, cds and cassette tapes and my video games (PC and console). Tidal doesn't replace the music collection, but it helps. For books I had to switch to an e-reader anyway. Games, the ones I could use on Steam are still there, but what I am really really missing is Pro Pinball: The Web (1996). It's emulated on Archive.org but I can never get it to play.
@morph yep, it seems to have a good handle on it (and if it falls in we have a rescue system with a wooden skewer so they can climb back out). And now I think I know what could be chewing its way out if it's in too far (sometimes there are chew holes in the pitchers). Most of the insects that visit get away just fine with a little treat and sometimes they are the little treat.
From earlier today, the water seems about the same as last night and the next street over is still evacuated. There were media, demonstrators and a politician in the neighborhood today. The basement of my place is flooded, otherwise seems okay still. #Regensburg#Hochwasser#Bavaria#Flood
