Sunday morning.
This map always shows NOAA’s “Fire Weather Outlooks” for the following day. At the time of my post, that would be Monday.

There are three levels based on forecasts for wind and humidity. NOAA designates those levels as Elevated, Critical and Extreme. On this map the area classified as Extreme is purple.

Thursday morning. At the time of my post the #GIS layer with the damage assessment data for #EatonFire shows that 8,901 structures have been evaluated. Of those, 4,627 have been designated as destroyed (damage > 50%). Note that some of the evaluated structures are outside of the fire perimeter. #LAfires

Got bad data?

Here is another example of why you should be cautious about relying on apps like onX, LandGlide, Regrid, etc that show property line data.

A client sent me the survey map for their subdivision and ask me to produce a map showing the approximate location of their property lines and survey stakes. Software that I developed used the survey data to produce the red lines and survey stake locations you see on the screenshot.

The white lines are the county #GIS parcel line data which obviously has significant problems. The apps that show property lines simply display a copy of the county GIS parcel line data.

If I find district data someone wants then I can export that data as a KMZ file which you can open on your device using Google maps.

If you open this map it may take 10-20 seconds for all the data to load. NOAA's servers are extremely busy.

Glad that the lost hiker in Colorado was rescued. But stories like this sure bother me. After all, the guy had a cell phone with GPS. If he had the most basic map on his phone showing the trail/route and his location then this near disaster would not have happened.
