Billy Van Der Laar (wavdl@sfba.social)'s status on Wednesday, 23-Oct-2024 05:16:23 JST Billy Van Der Laar Since I've been knocking on doors this election season im reminded again how much I hate the San Francisco style house where nobody lives on the ground floor.
The worst versions are like this one, common out in the sunset, where you're just faced with a garage door and a gate. When someone answers the door they often open the front door at the top of the stairs where you can't see them and shout down, or just open the front window above you. I don't blame them for this, I wouldn't want to have to go up and down the stairs for no reason, it's just a very separated and isolated suburban type experience created by the obsession of stuffing car storage into everything we design.
Maybe I'm naive and idealistic but if I ever buy a house I want to be able to greet someone face to face when they come knocking on my door, even if they're some annoying canvasser I don't actually want to talk to.

Billy Van Der Laar (wavdl@sfba.social)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Sep-2024 07:14:43 JST Billy Van Der Laar Just heard SFPD scold a cyclist over their cruisers loudspeaker to "next time, wait until the light turns green". I presume this was after they crossed with the leading pedestrian signal, which was explicitly made legal in California as of Jan. 2024. (And is far safer than waiting for a turning vehicle to hook you)
You can imagine my shock that these dumbass cops don't know the laws they're supposedly enforcing.

Billy Van Der Laar (wavdl@sfba.social)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Jun-2024 06:48:52 JST Billy Van Der Laar Hey friends, as many of you know, I’m among the 50 workers who were unfairly retaliated against by Google for taking part in sit-ins and protests to demand they cut ties with Israel’s genocide in Gaza as well as stop the internal retaliation, harassment and racism against Palestinian, Muslim, and Arab Googlers.
I’m now helping raise money for urgent living needs and our collective legal fees. Personally I have a stable living situation and no dependents, but many of my colleagues have expensive medical bills and family members to take care of. Also lawyers are expensive.
Please consider donating to support our legal battle, as the outcome of this case will set a precedent for all worker’s rights in the US. We are primarily seeking support from fellow tech workers, who have the most direct stake in the outcome of this case, which we believe will set a precedent to protect tech worker organizers against retaliation in the future.
