Just heard SFPD scold a cyclist over their cruisers loudspeaker to "next time, wait until the light turns green". I presume this was after they crossed with the leading pedestrian signal, which was explicitly made legal in California as of Jan. 2024. (And is far safer than waiting for a turning vehicle to hook you)
You can imagine my shock that these dumbass cops don't know the laws they're supposedly enforcing.

@wavdl I've seen SFPD cops scold people over the loudspeaker for crossing in an unmarked crosswalk, despite that being legal for years, probably decades.

@kingrat is crossing at an unmarked crosswalk under a different law than the "jaywalking" that was decriminalized just in 2023?

@wavdl @scott Nah. The one I saw was at an intersection. It also wouldn't have been jaywalking even if mid-block because there was no traffic except the cop who was a block away when the person crossed. But as they got closer they got on the loudspeaker to yell at them, even though it was a) legal, and b) the person was about 5 feel from finishing getting across when the cop started loudspeaker admonishments. I'm pretty sure the cop was doing it because the crosser appeared to be homeless.

@scott @kingrat ah I see, that would make more sense. I had thought maybe Phil meant crossing mid-block

@wavdl @kingrat Yeah, there's automatically considered to be a crosswalk (even if unmarked) at any intersection, except of certain narrow alleys, and it's always (afaik) been legal to cross at them unless explicitly banned by a barrier/signage.
