    @dekkzz76 @shelenn @deadbeef I fully agree. My predictions:

    1. Twitter will stay the dominant media-fed and media-driven social platform at least in the US.
    2. Bluesky won't make it. Investors will soon realize that it is a scam, nothing else.
    3. The Fediverse will grow slowly and organically. More from Europe than other parts of the world.
    4. #Mastodon will blow up because all its major instances will be hit by a simultaneous multi-day spam bot attack leading to Amazon #AWS blocking all traffic to&from Mastodon instances and there is nothing they can do about it because Eugen was busy implementing #Twitter UX into Mastodon Mobile Apps
    5. The Emacs.ch instance will move to a self-developed #CommonLisp fork of Mastodon (with a Non-Mastodon logo due to a trademark feud) that employs AI algorithms from the PAIP book, get's rid of all #JavaScript (because it is non-free) and is mainly used by users of the #mastodonEL #Emacs package
    6. Its operator will launch a second donations page begging for money to be able to buy two expensive #LispWorks HobbyistDV licenses because lispm from Reddit told him that this unparalleled, magical Lisp productivity is only gained with a superior IDE
    7. There will be heated discussions between factions of the Common Lisp and the Emacs Elisp community about their Lisp being the better, faster and "most free" one
    8. @amszmidt will chime in and do another "Emacs Lisp is not a Lisp - Bite me" post which generates so much traffic that the Emacs.ch instance will blow up in flames and its operator will eventually convert to a #Microsoft fanboy running an ancient fork of #FidoNet written in Omicron Pascal (but converted to #Delphi), hosted on a WinXP machine with IIS and #SQLServer2008.

    End of story.

@alex btw. is there a way to migrate a Mastodon server to Soapbox/Rebased? I.e. a DB migration script?

Hmm.. just contemplating.. how does a Mastodon™ API-compatible server, that runs on SQLite, offers full-text search w/o Elasticsearch, is a single binary, handles 20+ times the traffic on the same machine, fully migrates existing Postgres databases and supports multi-instance hosting, sound to you operators? 🤔

I'm sure that must already exist somewhere? 🍿 I'm sure ...

@rysiek @thisismissem @pearlbear I wonder why Mastodon gGmbH doesn't even consider closing sign-ups on mastodon.social or even doing manual approvals even for a few days until this gets all sorted out and at least some automated solutions are in place.

What do they have to loose? Is there money involved?

This would show a sincere effort on their side and everybody would be supportive.

But I get it, doing so would be an admission that there is an issue with the size of mastodon.social, attracting all the spam bots like a UV insect killer lamp.

I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.

Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.

I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.

@Gargron I urge the admins of mastodon.social to look into the recent spam accounts (empty profiles with links to porn sites in their profile) coming from their server.

I've recieved multiple reports from users of our instance, incl. myself, which were followed by one of these accounts, all coming from mastodon.social.

You should suspend new user registrations until this is resolved, or at least require some form of moderation - which is usually done by manually moderated instances like ours.

    Thank you!

@justsitandgrin You will most likely not get much agreement here on the #Emacs.ch server for promoting every single aspect of VSCode.

Because we know that the issue of VSCode is not just a technical one, but first of all: ethical.

Emacs gives you freedom. Also Emacs enables people without any programming background to have a very powerful tool at their hands for all sorts of text-based workflows. Emacs doesn't phone home, has no telemetry and will most likely survive VSCode.
