Hey #blind #students of #Mastodon.

So I'm running into some accessibility issues in my algebra course involving graphing. I do not have the support of state services for the blind, however I'm connected with disability services on campus. Otherwise, I'm going at all this on my own and for the most part handeling things well.

However, I'm not exactly sure how best to overcome things where advanced math and graphing come into play.

My tools currently include a standard, non-graphic calculator, a laptop running NVDA as a screen reader, 80-cell braille display on lone from disability services and a whole lot of tenacity. So far, I've maintained a consistent A in my course, but with the graphing stuff, I'm concerned that might change.

So, what are your tools and techniques for dealing with this and more advanced calculatory things? What add-ons may be of use, what tools should I be looking at, and what questions should I be asking?

@kaia We kinda need to see more of this honestly, and not just at conventions.

I'm all for normalizing contact between even casual interactions as we're all creatures of touch, but in this day and age, acknowledgement of consent is a lot more expected, so pins like these would be a good thing so people know who they can hug and who they shouldn't.

The one thing I keep coming backto is how us blind folks are mostly pinned into the Masto side of things, as there's really no Pluroma clients that are accessible to us, and the sites are generally shit. Bubble timeline much?

All the others are the same way. Very inaccessible, and the APIs, as I understand it, operate differently, so the two or three clients we do have that are made within our communities don't bridge the gap. That's not even going into the other fediverse platforms, most of which are really not friendly to our tech uses.

Also, there's the snag that some of us do have some useable vision, like myself for example, and all our clients made in the blind community feature absolutely no image support, which in the case of people like me, means that we're extra reliant on alt text images.

This is why I like ELK. The accessibility is passible though not the best, and I do get image and video support without having to leave the app.

Do you know what accessibility is like with the app? Like I know you don't use screen readers or any of that, but have you heard anything from other users?

So filters in the app don't work, and filters made site side don't work?

I'm not an AP expert, that would be more of @BeAware's shtick, if he doesn't mind me bringing him into this convo, at least I think?

I do use Elk from time to time which does respect filters and is mostly accessible. I do say mostly because navigation could use a little work to make it more intuitive and streamlined.

I love it for a lot of reasons, but the navigation is clunky. Better than Pinafore/Enafore or whatever it's called if you ask me, but still needs a little love. :)

@the_spc @BeAware Wait, there's accessibility mods beyond just the visual ones? First I've heard of it.

Also, I highly suggest using a different means of torrenting. ISPs tweak hard on it these days and the first time you grab something you'll get a DMCA notice.

Suggest using something like Seedhost.eu for an off shore server. Run a torrenting client from that server, harder sounding than it is, then send all your torrent magnet links to that.

After that just FTP in and pull down your stuff. Extra points for using VPN to hide the fact that you're on torrent sites from the ISP.

Can walk you through the whole deal, either of you. It's fairly affordable, and unless you're like me and dig for gold anywhere you see an x, the basic package will be enough to get you by at like six or seven dollars a month.

It sounds way more complicated than it is but it's pretty strait forward.
