@dansup No need for the SWF to bring ads to fedi, ads are already here in Misskey software, which supports admin-configured ads. You can see these ads on misskey.io, the flagship deployment of this software.
@dansup@evan@raphael@mike@johnonolan Is that already accounted for in the FediDB graph or is the drop only going to show next month? Are the servers themselves objectionable, or just the numbers they report that are suspicious?
@evan@raphael@mike@johnonolan@dansup Those numbers you're citing are what the unblocked servers report as MAU, not total registered accounts. The unblocked servers report ~1.4 million registered accounts altogether (950660+228908+294551).
This leaves ~500k new accounts we can maybe attribute to actual growth. Which is still significant, but it's not 1.9M.
@dansup If by abuse you mean spam instances and fake nodeinfo data then that makes sense, inorganic traffic for its own sake shouldn't be accounted for. But the traffic on a banned instance like baraag.net for example is entirely organic and seeing it listed among a sea of ngrok.io instances just makes FediDB reporting unhelpful.
@dansup The stats on FediDB haven't been accurate for a while, a couple of legitimately run instances are banned, despite comfortably belonging in the top 10 largest instances by user count and MAU.
