I hear a lot of people clamoring for Two-Factor Authentication on FurAffinity after all that's happened, but you really gotta be patient folks, it's hard enough running one FA, let alone 2FA
Normalize being fucking patient with free and open-source software.
Normalize not saying "phew, this latest version was a fucking disaster! the old versions were better" to everyone you know, especially if you contributed no development, testing, issue reporting or other time to the software.
Normalize writing GitHub issues that thoroughly describe a problem as well as you absolutely can (you don't have to be perfect at this, but it's more important that you're patient and considerate than being exactly technically correct) without editorializing in it. Leave out the "I'm going to (paid competitor)" threats and the "This software is shit now" sentiments. You are talking to human beings who are giving you a thing for free, so the least you can do is not make them regret doing that.
As Israel invaded Gaza, their tanks fired upon a building with a teenage girl living inside it; the building crushed her leg and her family had to amputate it with a knife. The Israelis didn't allow any medical care in or out for four days, so she just writhed in unimaginable pain the whole time.
There is no way in hell that what is happening in Gaza isn't a genocide.
But I just can't picture enduring the endless stream of traumas that the Gazan people are experiencing right now and ever forgiving the Israeli leadership, military, or even its people.
No doubt, this has left whole new generations of Gazans so scarred that they will hold that anger in their hearts forever. No doubt, Israel will use that anger to call them "terrorists" and heap ever more atrocities upon them, as though it was justified.
With systemd now poised to replace sudo as well I can't help but be a little bitter about the way in which the concerns about systemd being an ever-scope-creeping behemoth of attack surface area controlled by one (admittedly rather unpleasant) person were swept to the margins and everyone pushed forward with it like nobody cared, and now our modern Linux distro choices just treat it like an inevitability and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it because it was "already decided" years ago
So Serif made it official on Twitter and in e-mails to customers that they've been acquired by Canva, a cloud-based editor with a subscription pricing model.
Given the Affinity community's fervent love for the software came very heavily from its "buy once, own forever" business model in contrast to Adobe's go-fuck-yourself subscriptionware, this acquisition does not bode well for the long-term good will of the company and its products.
Serif says nothing will change. This has basically never been true even once in the history of acquisitions like this.
Enjoy the next year or so tops, before the "hard decisions" start coming out, and they announce they're "excited to transition" to a subscription model to keep number going up.
But hey, cheer up! There is nothing you love in this world that capitalism won't eventually destroy.
A warm welcome to anyone stumbling upon the Fediverse for the first time, or who finally broke down and set up an account. :)
Trust me, the Fediverse is not perfect. It has its moments of heated and sometimes hurtful discourse, and it often rewards simplistic takes that lack crucial nuance, but that's less a product of the protocol and more a "human thing".
Like any place, you learn to make the most of it. You build connections with people who share your passions and beliefs, you foster the healthy relationships and discard the unhealthy ones, and eventually you come to feel more at home.
The principles of the Fediverse, of independence from corporate influence and algorithmic cruelty, of an open platform where we can see each other even from different little sandboxes, are something I still believe strongly in.
I hope you find people who value and care about you here. :)
