e(Ag)le 🦅 (silvereagle@floofy.tech)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Mar-2024 19:32:58 JST e(Ag)le 🦅 So Serif made it official on Twitter and in e-mails to customers that they've been acquired by Canva, a cloud-based editor with a subscription pricing model.
Given the Affinity community's fervent love for the software came very heavily from its "buy once, own forever" business model in contrast to Adobe's go-fuck-yourself subscriptionware, this acquisition does not bode well for the long-term good will of the company and its products.
Serif says nothing will change. This has basically never been true even once in the history of acquisitions like this.
Enjoy the next year or so tops, before the "hard decisions" start coming out, and they announce they're "excited to transition" to a subscription model to keep number going up.
But hey, cheer up! There is nothing you love in this world that capitalism won't eventually destroy.
