#colombia Statement by President Gustavo Petro (thread, 5/?)
"You don’t like our freedom, fine. I won’t shake hands with white enslavers. I will shake hands with white libertarians, heirs of Lincoln, and with the Black and white farm boys of the U.S., at whose graves I wept and prayed on a battlefield I reached after walking through the mountains of Tuscany and surviving COVID. They are the U.S., and before them, I kneel—before no one else"
#colombia Statement by President Gustavo Petro (thread, 4/?)
"Colombia is the heart of the world, and you’ve failed to understand that. This is the land of yellow butterflies, of the beauty of Remedios, but also of Colonel Aureliano Buendía, and I am one of them, perhaps the last. You may kill me, but I will survive in my people, who existed long before yours, in the Americas. We are people of the winds, the mountains, the Caribbean Sea, and freedom."
Colombia caved?
The US will not levy threatened #tariffs on #Colombia after reaching a deal, the White House said — Bloomberg
What are the differences between Diaspora, Pleroma, Hubzilla, Hometown, and Glitch? How do they compare to Friendica as far as features? I've heard there are Mastodon instances that allow for longer posts, editing, and deletion. Do they also allow for extensive profiles with keywords, etc? Are there any other networks I should know about? Finally, will the interface of the page on Friendica change depending on my instance? Maybe, it's just a matter of changing that! If I changed to another network, I'm guessing I couldn't export my profile, followers, etc. there. Most importantly, I need something that is truly compatible with Mastodon, because that's technically what TweeseCake was designed for. Since Friendica is very compatible, I can use TweeseCake without any problems.

Trying hard not to be that pushy tech person, but also herding people towards the fedi.
Now is a great time to talk about your server. When I say "I help run a social media server" I worry it sounds like "I'm in charge of the CIA!" that *is* how it can sound.
No one has any idea what's going on out here in the free and open air.
Spending thirty million dollars to get bluesky to interoperate with itself while people are out here connecting C64s, AA-powered PalmPilots, aquarium pumps and toothbrushes to the Fediverse is definitely an entire idea.
excuse me, that should read "you dug your own grave"
@dsalo "As we look to the future, we will know we’ve been successful in meeting this goal when a thriving creative commons exists to solve the world’s greatest challenges." 🫠🙃
@inquiline things could really go sideways there https://carfree.city/@scott/113874026713453444
Both Proton & our CEO stand against authoritarianism; check out this article for more info: https://www.compiler.news/proton-vpn-venezuela-russia/
Proton is not controlled by any individual, but by the non-profit Proton Foundation, which is based in Switzerland and politically neutral.
Another day, another prominent scientist leaving the US for China.
I wonder if anyone has studied the microbiota of the thousands of varieties of teas? We do so many curious things to age, ferment, process and brew— I wonder what it all produces? #teaculture #tea #microecology #microbiology #fermentation
In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: #Wikipedia became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.
That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons.

Wow this struck a chord, it seems I was not the only one who was not aware of this story!
Some additional info:
@teclista shared that the protagonists are on the fedi as well (of course they are!):

@__nate__ wrote about the episode in several papers (for example: https://networkcultures.org/cpov/2011/01/15/spanish_fork/) and also a book: https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/W/bo19085555.html
@rwg also wrote about the episode in a book:

"in the light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation" was referring to things such as https://hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff/113868325221306547
Finally, I don't have a soundcloud to promote, but I'd really like to see the first paid position for Trust & Safety on the fediverse get funded:

please chip in if you care about digital commons

I've been active out there but are not able to do much now due to age and health. There are very good reasons why some are vocal online but not out there.
One of the most tragic examples of this failure was the Spanish Civil War. Of course, history doesn't repeat itself exactly. And the internet really does fundamentally change the dynamics of human movements. But yeah... a refusal, on the left, to be led, to coalesce, played a big part.
Now, it may be a failure of imagination on my part to see how an effective resistance is possible without concrete leadership. I hope so. Because our appetite for rejecting the imperfect seems limitless to me 7/
"If the fines...Facebook faced for invading our privacy exceeded the ad-targeting revenue it makes by doing so, it would stop spying on us. Facebook wouldn't like it. Zuck would hate it. But he'd do it, because he spies on us to make money, not because he's a voyeur." Totally excellent piece from @pluralistic on profit, enshittification and federation https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/20/capitalist-unrealism/#praxis
i think if we can expect what we get from kilns, from sewing machines, from bicycles, and apply that to the other things we depend on, we could be in a better place with our relationship to technology
