Since we had a bit of a @lurk outage last night, and since @pixelfed just rolled out their shiny and new Instagram Import feature, I took the opportunity to test run it.

Amazing: the whole process was smooth and easy. There are some limitations, of course: you need to manually select which pictures to import, and there's a top limit of 1000 images - but a couple of hours later, I had just over 750 IG posts from between 2013 and 2023 up on my pixelfed account:

@goatsarah Do you think there's some way we can get the gringos to move over to Blsky or something? They'd be so much happier there. A proper, USian company. No Europeans. No weird memes. No other languages. Nobody talking about places in the world you've never heard about. It would be perfect.

@Niquarl The irony is that #gnufm was already federated about a decade ago. That project is now archived, but one of the lead developers, @mattl here, is onto new, federated, ActivityPub-related things:

@RobertaFidora #LibreFM kind of laid the foundations for something like that. (I can't recall whether they switched to the #PumpIO protocol or not). These days, I can imagine something like the #Maloja servr, but using the #ActivityPub protocol. Of course, we'd get federated instances, so no-one will be able to get all the data (good riddance, Top10 lists). It could be interesting.

Something that has me transfixed with the #fedi right now is that I don't think I've even seen such deep debate of the social and ethical implications of software anywhere in social media before. Not at this pace, anyway. Any technical "feature" has moral implications, every political decision is looking for a technical implementation. And the ground keeps shifting under our feet.

@krn @mattl Do you mean lens correction or something else? It depends on what OS you're on, but in my case, @darktable (which piggy-backs on the lensfun library) does a pretty good job. Admittedly, with my Ricoh GRIII, there's only one lens profile I need to have covered, but it works like a charm.

@krn @mattl Hmm, yeah, if you want iPad support, your options are more limited. I find Snapseed on Android really great for RAW processing, but you don't get any of the sync features of Lightroom. But if you consider it from a cost perspective...
