@glyph let's be clear, this is not a viability question. We broke even on tickets and sponsorships, but we didn't increase our reserve. We're doing this because we don't reach the audience we want – the young and impressionable, and people who are shut out of other tech events by not focusing on access. Is it worth us trying very hard to make a special event if only the chosen few get to attend? Probably not.
@skinnylatte I read in this [0] interview with Stephen Colbert that learning to get actually good as a performer meant learning to "love the bomb" – i.e. realising that you _need_ to have bad experiences to learn to stop fearing having a bad experience.
A slide from my #NBPy closing. Running a community conference for cheap is a difficult slog. Our cheaper tickets are offered as close to the margin as we can possibly afford. Unless something changes on the sponsor/donation side, this is going to be difficult to catch up.
Today's excellent news is that after my call to action to donate to #NBPy during the weekend, we received $600 in donations, in addition to $150 received earlier in the year.
That means we exceeded 2024's income. Hooray! Not everything is terrible!
And our opening talk from #NBPy from @skinnylatte was exactly the talk we needed to open the conference – showing the intersection between joy and fulfilling work in tech exists, and actually needs our help. It was an absolute delight to have Adrianna in Petaluma, hope we see her on our stage again!
This talk from @joelle is the best talk on neurodivergence I've seen -- it's not going out of its way to convince, but to explain and to share experience. Seek out the video tomorrow. #NBPy
And here is the video of @joelle's talk – hands-down the best talk on neurodivergence in the workplace I've seen, and a highlight of #NBPy for this year.
@skinnylatte I put that in there as a joke the first year; 6 days out from the event, I got a serious inquiry, and he came by kayak both days. I think there was even a group outing last year!
(I will forgive you getting the name of the event wrong ;))
