@BeAware @ilyess Whitewind has defined a long form blogging “lexicon” (data type, like AP Vocabulary where microblogging = note, long form = article).

All Lexicons get stored in a user PDS and no new accounts are needed.

Whitewind also has a front end AppView which lets you author & read blogs. Anyone could write their own AppView.

@BeAware @ilyess yes, federation is turned on (not really the same architecture as AP in any case)

There are 227 separate personal data servers (PDS) https://blue.mackuba.eu/directory/pdses

It’s open source and you can run your own. You can connect into Bluesky’s client, or use a third party client.

Manton from Micro.blog @manton intends to enable the service as an ATProtocol PDS:

    > “The long-term plan for Micro.blog is to fully support AT’s PDS — Personal Data Servers. Any blog hosted on Micro.blog would plug into Bluesky seamlessly, with data portable to other AT Protocol hosting providers.”

Micro.blog already functions as an ActivityPub server, and currently supports cross-posting to Bluesky.

20 years of Flickr. And I just happened to tell the story today of the tech meetup I organized in Vancouver 20 years ago. 6 people came, including Roland Tanglao, who got us all early access to Flickr.

I still have the blog post from the Vancouver Geek Dinner. And some notes on that early full screen Flash-powered version of Flickr. And some sort of Flickr Buddy Icons that still works 20 years later.

Bridges. Plural. Just like instances, plural.

    Search indexing. Plural.

It’s all open source code. The reality is that ActivityPub is opt out.

You can choose an allowlisted network, have instance or new types of servers with defaults that aren’t public (Hometown allows this), or keep it as is and educate people on their defaults.

Client settings for defaults is another layer for innovation.

The developer of the Graysky client for Bluesky has written up how to embed replies from Bluesky as comments on your blog.

Like I said for Mastodon comments, not going to enable this on my site.

I’m going to attempt to explain in general terms how I think about an #ActivityPub bridge.

I’m over on Bluesky. I see this interesting ActivityPub account coop-AT-cosocial-dot-ca. I’d like to follow it!

It has open follows, so the bridge subscribes to that account on my behalf. It’s kind of like a “bridge instance”.

Depending on how the bridge is implemented, maybe you see boris-bluesky-AT-bridge-instance

This is similar to your feed reader (a foreign network protocol) subscribing to the RSS feed of your Mastodon account.

It’s open. The rules of the protocol are being followed. There is no opt-in for that RSS feed — other than turning on “request to follow” in your Mastodon account.

Ryan Barrett posted about his forthcoming #ATProtocol <> #ActivityPub bridge and had a lot of people lose their minds

    https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://snarfed.org/2024-02-12_52106

He wrote a great article back in January entitled “Moderate people, not code” that is good background

    > “Whether ActivityPub or ATProto or webmention, the underlying technical protocol a community uses to interact online is a poor way to judge who they are and whether you might like them.”

@Matt_Noyes @ntnsndr @robin it’s a genuine request if there is interest, because we know some people who are interested and setting up a new co-op is more work.

And by Bluesky, we mean #ATProtocol - running open source PDS server where user data is delegated for hosting.

I’ll add my interest: because I don’t think there is one open social protocol that will win and would like to share the experience of PDS hosting with an international group.

If any new followers who are participating in the longest thread ever on slightly experimenting with software funding and ownership are interested, I help run a Canadian co-op that is member owned and hosts a Mastodon server, CoSocial https://blog.cosocial.ca

This server I host along with some other apps on a system I call the #CommonsComputer

It’s powered by #Cloudron, for which I pay a subscription in exchange for maintaining and updating both the server & all the apps that I deploy.

@vid there is no plan. No one’s in charge.

Funding, open source effort and contributions, individuals writing tutorials, design research etc etc etc

Same as the web. Same as the world. Everything is lacking. Find others and work on what you want to see.
