> The shingles vaccine could be an effective intervention for dementia, with a large "natural experiment" in Wales finding a substantial drop in dementia risk for those who received the vaccine.
> Two poorly placed cacti more than 50 years ago have turned into a full-scale invasion. It's prompting calls for people to dispose of their cacti safely to avoid a very prickly problem.
I forget which of you excellent people taught me the phrase "I can't repair the roof because I'm using all my energy mopping up the floor" recently, but it has lived rent-free in my head ever since. Incredible summary of chronic illness life.
> Steve Gillis spent months trying to find answers to the "constant companions" of tinnitus, brain fog and visual disturbances that followed him after he had recovered from a virus. Now there are hopes others with visual snow syndrome will face an easier path to diagnosis.
I have just learnt that rats' ears go pinker when they're happy so now every time my cursed ears are red and angry and pissing me off, I will think of happy rats with pink ears and maybe feel slightly better? 🥰🐀
@eniko Yup, I added my preferred respirator as I figured anyone looking for that kind of info will be able to infer a lot from the fact that I have a strong preference 😁
God I can't tell you how good it feels when I see someone who looks really cool and who I want to follow and I can see immediately in their profile that they're not a willing plague spreader, so I don't have to scroll through their images trying to work it out for myself. Ahhhh so good 😍
I have a hard time trusting people who (in public at least) only ever say positive and uplifting things about being chronically ill. I get that a positive mindset is a really big deal for some people, and it's good that it helps, but I suspect it feeds into the common abled perception that anyone who's struggling is just not being positive enough or not trying hard enough. I think we should talk about the really shitty parts of chronic illness in public, too.
People who share their joy in doing a thing without trying to make you feel bad for not doing the thing, or insisting that everyone can do the thing, are so wonderful to follow. I love seeing your pickled vegetables and your mended clothes and your hand crafted electronic doodads and the photos you took on your hike and the interesting new way that you cycled today 😍
Pals if anyone knows of any Australian companies who completely genuinely fully support 100% remote employment and who may be in the market for a grizzly old greybeard software architect, lmk 🙏🏻 I know Atlassian seems to be onboard with fully remote, any other recommendations very welcome! #GetFediHired
Fellow Aussies, have you heard of Yarn'n toilet paper?? It's made in Australia, 100% recycled, 50% of profits goes to First Nations Education programs, and it's Indigenous owned! https://yarnn.au/
