When I was in NYC the other week there was a Yemeni coffee place near my hotel. Only had a chance to get a coffee on my way to the Port Authority bus station to get to Newark airport. Glad I bought a bag of whole beans and asked some questions on how they were making their coffee. I’ve made Turkish/Greek coffee at home a fair amount but now adding cinnamon, cardamom and clove with a touch of sugar is a special happy place.

Wish I could find Yemeni green beans in NZ so I can roast my own. Will keep looking.

@skinnylatte I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Cavalier with such short hair. They always look like they have such long ears with their hair. That said mine is due for a serious trim now that our weather is warming up. But mostly I need to trim his fuzzy butt.

@botvolution the reality is that I’ve been paying GST for NZ to folks like AliExpress and it just works. But that is the seller, not the postal system. Postal carriers and shipping companies haven’t been setup to pay duty/tariffs from the sender’s side historically. Customs clearance is done at the destination country where that country is responsible for their own collection and adherence to their own rules. So maybe some are adapting - until the orange dude has another tantrum and changes things again.

Trumps latest tariff tantrum reinstated tariffs on small value parcels (<$800), but the US doesn’t have systems in place to process and collect tariffs for this massive quantity of shipments. So they have told other countries that they are responsible for collecting the tariff at the point of origin. Of course, that isn’t how tariffs work so postal and shipping companies are just not accepting parcel shipments to the US

@skinnylatte I get many of the Kiwis and those of British origin just saying “those are scones” without knowing that biscuits like this even exist. Maybe they call the ones at KFC scones also for all I know.

Finally made my own biscuits and gravy. Found a recipe for the biscuits that freezes the butter and then grates it into the flour. Genius! Pork mince with tons of sage, thyme, garlic, black pepper and chili flakes.

Made this for myself as my birthday breakfast.

For anyone who says “ah, scones” - they are not. Consistency is quite different. Hate to make the comparison, but what people may know are the biscuits at KFC (which are sad versions of a baking powder biscuit)

@skinnylatte Chinese funeral band cracks me up. I think there is a scene in some Lee Ang movie of a funeral in Taiwan and the music (or the feeling about unexpected the music was) sticks out in my memory. Now I’m going to be trying to figure out if it is an actual memory of a scene from a movie or something I imagined/dreamed.

@Moss @skinnylatte curry rice is also a kids favorite in Japan along with omurice but it definitely isn’t a kids’ food. Omurice was pretty common as a lunch special in the subterranean restaurants of the train stations and office buildings when I lived in Japan. And of course curry rice is everywhere. They are more comfort foods than food for kids in my experience.

Was trying to explain omurice to my daughter and remembered this scene from Tampopo (now I need to watch the movie again after too many years) and she immediately says “oh, I’ve seen someone making that online”. Of course she has. No idea how she could have come across a video of someone making it and now I’m wondering what other cool food she already knows about but doesn’t mention
