    @johnquiggin
Given Russia’s depleted arsenal and reduced capacity to replace lost equipment, a united #EU effort to give #Ukraine what it needs is in my view (besides turning the conflict into an EU proxy-war) enough to defeat Russia militarily and push its troops (and proxies) all the way back to the Ukrainian borders agreed to in 1991.

And it’s about time it did.

All thanks to the #TangerineBaby and his cohort of bumpkins for the burgeoning of a #UnitedEurope. Let’s not kick the #US out of #NATO, let’s just ignore it for the time being.

    Telling words from #GraceTame:

“The prime minister doesn’t need my advice, and I’m sure he isn’t interested in it either. I don’t envy him or his job. I can only imagine it’s a poison chalice, and I’ve no desire to hold another one of those. I just hope he remembers that while pressure and privilege may come from the plutocracy, in this country (for now at least), his power still comes from the people.”

Why is my t-shirt more offensive to our prime minister than a 50-year assault on democracy?

I don’t always agree with #GetUp campaigns, but in this instance there is a lot of evidence ( #Murdochmedia ) to support their assertions. In any case, #NegativeGearing and #CapitalGains are two inflationary policies which need to go. My fervent hope is for Labor to be reelected in 2025 to give them the confidence to drop the sheepish attitude and get on with truly progressive policies, include this one.

“As the year comes to a close, let’s not forget how the Murdoch empire is keeping housing unaffordable for everyday people. By protecting corporate greed and blocking bold housing reforms, they’re driving up prices and leaving families behind. But 2025 is our chance to fight back. #HousingJustice #PeopleOverProfit #FairHousingForAll #EndNegativeGearing #StopCorporateGreed

This is getting repetitive. Even so, it bears tooting again (From Australian Institute (dot) org)

“The Australian Government gives most of the gas exported from Australia by foreign-owned gas corporations for free.

They pay no royalties. The gas industry is ripping Australians off, and our governments are letting them.

    Tax the gas industry.”

Perceiving their training infrastructure as anything but a horrific all-consuming parasite destroying the internet (and wasting real-life resources at a grand scale) is delusional. #ChatGPT isn't a fun toy or a useful tool, it's a _someone else's_ utility built with complete disregard for human creativity and craft, mixed with malicious intent masquerading as "progress", and should be treated as such. https://pod.geraspora.de/posts/17342163

An ecofriendly, high performance, organic battery from UNSW.
This is just one of a series of alternatives to lithium batteries now in the late-stages of contemporary research.

“A team of scientists at UNSW Chemistry are developing an eco-friendly, high-performance organic battery that utilises protons.

By leveraging hydrogen ions – protons – instead of traditional lithium, these batteries hold promise for addressing some of the critical challenges in modern energy storage, including resource scarcity, environmental impact, safety and cost.

The material – tetraamino-benzoquinone (TABQ) – developed by PhD candidate Sicheng Wu and Professor Chuan Zhao, in collaboration with UNSW Engineering and ANSTO, has the ability to store energy quickly, last longer, and perform well under sub-zero conditions. “

Large data centre planning should require by law to fund the full cost of their energy requirements. That should help keep the planet cooler somewhat.

“Scatterings of these nodules carpet vast areas of the ocean's bottom. They're natural deposits of rare-earth metals like cobalt, manganese, and nickel, all jumbled up in a polymetallic mix. We value these exact metals for their use in batteries, and it turns out that's exactly how the rocks may be spontaneously acting on the ocean floor.

The researchers found single polymetallic nodules produced voltages of up to 0.95 V. So when clustered together, like batteries in a series, they can easily reach the 1.5 V required to split oxygen from water in an electrolysis reaction.” (Source: NATURE

It seems that deep sea mining for these ‘nodules’ has caused unrecoverable ‘dead zones’ where not even bacteria can survive. There should be a UN Convention to ban deep sea mining. #environment #NaturalBatteries #deepseamining #darkOxygen

Chugging quietly away in the dark depths of Earth's ocean floors, a spontaneous chemical reaction is unobtrusively creating oxygen, all without the involvement of life.

It seems I have to eat my words… Biden did bow out of the race after all. On the upside, I can’t help but feel the same king of exhilaration that I felt when Obama was confirmed on the Democratic ticket. I fervently hope history will repeat itself this time around, for the sake of all americans and those of us who catch a cold when America sneezes. #uspol

I am going to bow out as well. I’ll not comment on the Presidential race until November. Too much going on in ol’ Australia and I don’t think I can stand keeping a eye on the political circus on both continents concurrently. It’s not good for my mental health.

@dangillmor IMHO, calls for Biden to step down make no politico-strategic sense at all. While the news media bulls**t is amplifying these ridiculous calls from a minority (7 demoncrats on the last count, the GOP and the MAGA propaganda machine), there is scant coverage (if any at all in the mainstream media) about #Trump’s brainfarts or #project2025 ‘s fascist manifesto. ‘1984’ newspeak is alive and well in the US today. #uspol #BidenHarris

@ben_hr why, why must we always point the finger to Others? Granted we have been doing this since time immemorial (back in the cave days). But why must we endure this facile rationalisation just because it is ingrained in our genes. Nothing changes, we never learn from past actions and as a result every generation finds itself in such a mess that the only safety valve is to blame in on previous generations. I have amessage for the younger generations: if you are lucky enough to live in a democracy, do your civic duty (and something for yourself) and vote responsibly. Now, that, would be a good way to stop blaming others for your circumstances. /end of rant.

Are we seeing the begining of ‘enshitification’ in the fediverse? Moderators and admins have some work coming their way in the next few years as the ‘bird’ finally dies off to keep the fediverse within the bounds of what should be a friendly, non-threatening (non predatory) social space. IMO. Screen shot fo account in comment.
