Cool new PayPal scam unlocked.
Scammer sent me an invite and their account name is literally "Payment processed, if this wasn't you call this scam number", so the email looks like PayPal is sending me a "oops did you drop $500 on BitCoin, if not call the help desk"
Fist thing I did was check both my PayPal and my bank account through verified official means. No money moved. Then I checked to see if the email was from a valid source. It was. Then I finally noticed the "invited you as a dev" which means their account name is the payment processed scam.
My IT training prepped me for this. How many well intentioned individuals who aren't prepped will fall for it? More than 0 is too many. They'll see the scam, get scared, and try to call the number.
I implore all of you to talk to your friends, family, classmates, coworkers, etc about scammers and their tactics. Think of the "talk" like getting a vaccine. It hurts and isn't fun, but helps everyone. Not everyone is computer literate. Not everyone is trained to look for this sort of stuff. I've had several family members fall for many such scams over the years and lost tens of thousands of dollars to assholes looking to make a quick buck off of good uninformed people. Taking the time to help out a person who might be susceptible to this kind of attack is the best prevention.
