@thomasfuchs i gave up and set up forgejo (a gitea fork) on my virtual server. setup wasn't _too_ wacky and all i have to do to maintain it is occasionally download an updated binary.
of course there's something to be said for "somebody else deal with hosting" :D
the great thing about the 1990s is they were closer to the 1970s than to today

// @fixme make this less awful
@thomasfuchs are Heretic and Hexen retro now? I thought they had a great spooky fantasy vibe
we always used to tell newbie foss devs "just scratch an itch!" -- find something that bothered them in the software they used and try to fix it
this *sounds* like good advice (it's nicely self-motivating) but it's often fraught in practice because the things that bug you have often been open in the bug tracker for 20 years with 200 duplicated bug reports merged into them
sometimes if nobody's scratched that itch yet it's because it's *hard to reach*
of course, other times nobody looked ;)
as far as i can tell the main reason Electron exists is that macOS makes it hard to alt+tab between windows of the "same app"
(hint: use cmd+` instead of cmd+tab)
folks i added a ~2000 lumen lamp to my home office this fall and it's SO GREAT compared to the shitty lighting i had in here without it
@lanodan @yuvipanda @mattl @mirabilos no it's a cross-platform bug, affected mac and windows too :D

hosting in 503 just seems like bad luck
tarfucker: derogatory term for a unix admin who prefers to install binaries from ad-hoc archives instead of a package manager
Interesting; the macOS 14 Sonoma upgrade forces your wifi to re-enable itself if you had it disabled before the upgrade 🙃
like say because you have wired gigabit ethernet
unix: "everything is a file"
developers: "what if an api is more complex than reading/writing character streams?"
unix: "everything is a file with ioctls"
