.....I think one requires a real world full moon to get the right stuff happening. -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Saturday, 05-Oct-2024 19:53:10 JST Len @nate yeah I'm using Win10 Pro with mine but I think the main reason it's not giving issues is because I have a 4 physical core CPU that can expand it to 8 virtual cores.
16GB RAM on one stick or even two wouldn't perform as well, and you're really reliant on having an OS that can do clever stuff with the RAM and cores it has. I don't think Win10 would've played nice with a different CPU setup.
About the only thing that chokes it up is if I'm running 4 open Visual Studio programs and debugging a few of them while having browsers and notetaking stuff open alongside a few VMs as well as MS Teams, and VS (and Teams) is an everything hog so that's expected on pretty much every setup unless you've finetuned every step of hardware to OS for it.
(I should be clear my setup is for "computer science student turned professional developer, as well as gaming, as well as digital art". So it needs to handle a lot of stuff at once, and once upon a time I needed to be able to transport it everywhere, but I don't run incredibly intensive programs a lot like a 3D artist or machine learning specialist might - or even audio techs. I somehow lucked out with my choices 10 years ago even though my understanding of how CPUs worked and OSs was, and still kinda is, pretty mid.)
Bleh that's a lot of words to say mainly that RAM might not be your main bottleneck, but cores and how OS and CPU do swapping. -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Saturday, 05-Oct-2024 19:52:03 JST Len @nate .....I think I'm still on that, but I put in loads of sticks so my 2015 laptop can use all of its threads (so I got 4 sticks of 4GB RAM, 16 total, I think...?). And that laptop was the most expensive purchase I've ever made, and I saved up for years for it.
I have not needed an upgrade yet, unless I were to go in for machine learning, ray tracing, or if I needed to use accessibility stuff (things like screen readers need a lot oof). I don't want to need anything more, either. Things should stay accessible to people who can't afford new, which is like.... most of the world. -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Saturday, 28-Sep-2024 03:15:49 JST Len @solidsanek @aetios (I want to say the Sherlock one was the Secret of the Silver Earring but every Sherlock game has egregious jank involved) -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Saturday, 28-Sep-2024 03:15:49 JST Len @solidsanek @aetios see, the pro way to play 'em is to always have a walkthrough handy 'cause the designs were always partly jank back then and you'll inevitably run into something that no one would think is logical to put together. Puts frustration at minimum if you go in expecting to hit a wall at some point and having the walkthrough ready for it.
The most egregious games for that kind of thing that I've played are actually the Sherlock Holmes games and the Broken Sword games, the Sherlock one in particular involved pixel perfect movement that was only doable with a walkthrough with diagrams. -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Friday, 27-Sep-2024 05:19:49 JST Len Watched a B-Mask video on Rayman 3, then remembered I had Rayman 3 on GOG and booted it up.
Rest of the evening was Rayman 3.
It's rare to come across a game that weaves music into its game design and story so strongly, and that has such a strong identity in each world. Some things haven't aged well (jokes and the camera controls), but it's still one of my favourite games.
Managed to get to the swamp and am looking forward getting to the end boss, hee. He was always very fun. And I want to see the Teensie king again! -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Thursday, 05-Sep-2024 22:33:17 JST Len @izaya I guess something from my highschool and college years is relationship drama?
The rest was pretty uneventful but I was also a super loner so I sidestepped any friendgroup stuff. -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Thursday, 05-Sep-2024 22:33:15 JST Len @izaya me being asexual meant that I kinda caused collateral damage by existing, somehow, and we had more than one dude be a playboy with like... date all the girls as a goal?? But also good at making each individual feel like they'd be different.
In college there were some clicky groups but none of them mattered unless you wanted them to matter, there was no ostracism or anything and enough down to earth people that those were an outlier. But also, permanent loner, maybe my radar on that is broken. -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Wednesday, 24-Jul-2024 01:09:47 JST Len @sleepybisexual @goatsarah There's definitely a way that trans men are also a basilisk to a certain kind of person! Just haven't seen the pattern yet. Publicly right now the focus is on trans women so it's also hard to pick out an impersonal pattern. I know nonbinary umbrella is also something like that to a certain kind of person (the "you can do that?" realisation turns into a nasty "how dare you try" reaction). Shaking up of norms in a way that a person can't get out of their head, for good or bad.
I do like the reframing of basilisks. Sometimes it's nice to feel powerful like that instead of threatened or intimidated. -

Len (len@nyan.network)'s status on Wednesday, 15-Nov-2023 19:55:01 JST Len @izaya @Polychrome out of curiosity, was there ever a CRT monitor without that horrible high pitched noise? That was my main relief when switching to LCD (and doubly so when public screens finally switched, oof). -
