Jean (bohemianchic@infosec.exchange)'s status on Sunday, 01-Oct-2023 22:21:31 JST Jean Ive recently been asked what my favourite video game of all time is. What's yours?
Mine changes every now and then, but I always have a special place in my heart for Shadow of the Colossus. Or, maybe Haunting Grounds actually? Has anyone her played the latter? Its like clocktower but scarier and better storyline. Or actually maybe God of War or Bloodborne.
Yep, im indecisive

Jean (bohemianchic@infosec.exchange)'s status on Sunday, 17-Sep-2023 22:05:00 JST Jean I was interviewed on a podcast today. I was asked why 'liberally-minded' individuals might create technology that seems to support right-wing politics. Its an interesting question. The confusion arises because ppl often conflate economic liberalism with social liberalism, treating them as one. Economic liberalism is basically protecting private property and less regulation. And social liberalism is its best friend. While social liberalism advocates for individual rights and welfare measures, it only acts as a whitewashing tool to soften the sharper edges of capitalist exploitation without challenging its foundational injustices. If anything, a society based on social liberalism is a society that masks the inherent cntradictions of capitalism to make it more palatable to the working class. Panem et circense.
Focusing on individual rights and identity poltiics without challenging the capitalist economic order is putting a bandaid on a broken bone.

Jean (bohemianchic@infosec.exchange)'s status on Saturday, 09-Sep-2023 15:35:09 JST Jean Some Emirati pulled the race card on me again when I criticised Gulf/Middle Eastern countries for their Kafala system aka Modern Slavery. In case u aren't aware, Kafala system treats their workers as properties. So, this bloke thought I was white and called me racist for telling the truth about his country. First, Im not white. Not even a hint of European blood in me. I know because I had a DNA test, so don't tread on me. Second, And even if I were doesn't mean I cannot criticise how Gulf countries treat their migrants. You cannot pull the race card so you can escape a discourse about how you treat domestic workers in your country.

Jean (bohemianchic@infosec.exchange)'s status on Thursday, 07-Sep-2023 14:54:01 JST Jean Messaged my PhD supervisor that I am getting anxious abt the results of my PhD because I was told that it would take 6 weeks to finish the assessment. But its over 3 months now and still no one the wiser. 😂 so I just asked him to tell me whether I failed or not. 😂 Turns out so many people declined to examine my thesis because it sits in 5 different fields ranging from machine learning to political science to international relations. LOL

Jean (bohemianchic@infosec.exchange)'s status on Thursday, 07-Sep-2023 00:41:14 JST Jean I've been asked to comment on what I think the biggest tech trend in 2024 will be?
Short answer: Slavery
and let me tell you why. Data is the lifeblood that allows any machine learning model to perform its task. It’s not magic. It’s not the so-called “AI” being intelligent or intuitive. It’s statistics. And as the tech sector delves into rapid developments of specialised LLMs that they can further commoditise, they will require vast amounts of diverse data to train—leading to what some have called as data hunting.
And unfortunately, all of us who have posted even a single piece of content online are all part of this—whether we like it or not. We are now part of a universal digital sweatshop that transcends international borders. Our labour is ignored and uncompensated based on the capitalist belief that since we shared content freely, companies have the right to monetise it whenever they want. Time and time again, as we have seen in recent news, companies have collected our data without explicit consent. And when they do ask for ‘consent’, they give us word salad in the user agreements or just ask us to opt our way out of the inferno that they manufactured. The aggressive collection of data paves the way for a future where a few corporations will have disproportionate control over vast datasets, which they can exploit for unwarranted targeted advertising, surveillance and practices that would reinforce biases or unfairly influence individual choices and behaviours.
And let’s not forget the second step in the process where people (they call as taskers), mostly from the Global South, are hired for 2 USD a day to classify images, videos and texts so that your LLMs will not spew out gibberish. This is the reality behind your glamorous “AI” models. While “AI” companies in the developed world reap huge profits, the groundwork is outsourced to workers in Bangladesh, Kenya, the Philippines and India. But it is fine, isn’t it? As long as we don’t see them. Out of sight, out of mind.
