That new jet - how many "Things" could you hide in a jet?

If the Soviets could hide one in a craved seal of the US they gave as a gift is there any way to be certain they didn't figure a way to put something like it (updated for today) on an entire jet?

@inthehands @StillIRise1963 In no way to diminish the weight of this, but what practical effect could denying the diploma have?

Did these people not study? Did Columbia repossess the knowledge? Will professors and colleagues write less glowing endorsements?

Don't worry. The last starts to hint the troubles that will be inflicted. This is what the University believes is a punishment and others might consider a badge of honor.

Just pointing out the fictions maintained with credentials.

@cstross @midgephoto Ah. A bit more reading and I see what you're finding objectionable.

The "begin hearings just before a holiday/distraction" is a classic.

It's clear some folks who, while they can't fully manufacture consent, are happy to salt the fields in which rational objections might take root.

@midgephoto @cstross I'm reminded of laws that compelled operators of motor vehicles to have a person signaling with a red flag to precede the vehicle by 50 feet.

@profdc9 @walterbobrowski @kcarruthers @pluralistic Just a reality check here and people reading this thread might have a take: is it just me, or none of the larger media concerns dignify the existence of Mastodon? At the end of TV programs, chirps at the end of audio saying "like us on {name of platform}", and where your eyes come to rest before leaving a web page, there's an array of badges like stickers on a NASCAR flying the logos of platforms. But rarely, if ever, is Mastodon featured.

@profdc9 @walterbobrowski @kcarruthers @pluralistic Seem more than one stakeholder in the current state of affairs prefers people to stay in Anatevka, and, as much as they like to poach from each other, they, at the very least, agree they're not going to mention Mastodon.

Oh. I just read the f*cking article.

He lays it out pretty clearly.

Imagine how the web would have developed if there's been *more* proprietary pissing matches at the outset.

One downside of an approaching singularity is all the meantimes to enshitification of each successive technology are getting shortened along with any benefits.

Certainly if avarice has any say in the matter.

Wilhoit: Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
