   @midgephoto @cstross I'm reminded of laws that compelled operators of motor vehicles to have a person signaling with a red flag to precede the vehicle by 50 feet.

     @alakest @midgephoto You need to read up on the history of road transportation in the UK (which is where the red flag stuff came from). Hint: stagecoach operators objected to steam cars. They were killed off later by the railways.

     @cstross @midgephoto Ah. A bit more reading and I see what you're finding objectionable.

     The "begin hearings just before a holiday/distraction" is a classic.

     It's clear some folks who, while they can't fully manufacture consent, are happy to salt the fields in which rational objections might take root.
