@kingrat I contacted Dorsey's office to get the police to arrest a woman who assaulted our family. You'd have thought that would be right up his alley, but it turns out they have no juice with the cops over there.

@kingrat My problem was that everything turned into an encampment. One morning, I saw someone throw out a tv box - 6" wide by 5ft long. I thought, "I'd better go move that box before someone turns it into a house." I got out 20 minutes later, and it was still sitting on its narrow end (6"x5ft) when I went to pick it up though, there was already someone passed out inside it.

@kingrat I did a bulky pickup the day before I left soma. Homeless people took the small pieces of sheetrock for some reason, there was some cardboard, and people moved that 50 feet down the street and tried to live in it. They took the ancient bbq with all the mold in it and put it under the freeway and burned the three-legged chair I put out in it. A few months later, that encampment was still using that bbq. Everything, even splinters of wood, was hauled off by scavengers!
The funny thing is, I'm pretty confident that my name is flagged in 311 because of the front page story the sunday chronicle did on me and my shitty neighborhood 6 years ago. All of my neighbors would call in some pile of debris, and nothing would happen, but as soon as I did, it was gone. -

In my old neighborhood, if you called 311 about a pile of trash that no-one was yet using for a home, sometimes they'd come pick it up. Sometimes they'd drive by and say "not today satan" and leave it. Sometimes they wouldn't appear at all.
I set up a recology bulky item pickup, but a dpw guy showed up and started picking all of it up. I told him that I'd scheduled with recology, but he was "no problem, I'll get it." I asked if someone had filed a request, but he said, "I was just driving by and saw it."
I guess this is what it's like to live in the fancy part of town! -

why is it so loud in SF tonight? The giants are playing, right? It sounds like a concert at the ballpark, but it can't be.

@kingrat Ah. I sincerely love edm, the best music that was ever invented. It truly is good to know our robot overlords are able to drop the beat so well.

You've gotta love business people and their lizard-brain commitment to excel.
I have a tool that allows my client to work with their user list. It has name, email and access level. You can sort or filter by any of those fields. There are 180 users, paginated across 4 pages.
But.. they have to have a csv dump of it, for reasons. They want to check it for accuracy, which is something they can do in the tool they paid me to make. But csv! -

@kingrat I have yet to chat with him, he's sort of reclusive, but he puts up a monster in front of his house for christmas and often has silly things like this out in front. Do you know the spot?

questions for candidates who knock on my door:
* How will you reduce the number of police that SF is paying for, and how will you deal with police who are unwilling to do their jobs or engage in work slowdowns?
* Will you be pushing for scandinavian-style roadway design to separate bike lanes and reduce car violence against pedestrians and cyclists?
* Will you commit to not shoving the homeless from block to block for political gain?
* How can you effectively reduce the number of fires that are caused by homeless encampments?
* What will you do to eliminate corruption in DBI?
* Can you promise that teachers will actually get paid on time and commit to rolling back payroll software in SFUSD?
* What can you do to get more cars off the roads and reduce freeway pollution and noise in SF?
* will you end single-family zoning everywhere in SF? -

@kingrat that's the vibe! Though the log cabin aspect i have is nice in a way. It's as big as three futons laid width-wise.
My parents had no illusions about it being an investment. They just had $20k to work with and this is what we could get. I distinctly remember the real estate agent hearing our price range and showing us a pile of logs that was once a cabin in between the north and south lanes of interstate 87. This was better, I guess. -

There are two ancestral country estates in my family, and I find the contrast between them amusing.
My wife has a lake house in Maine. It's got a dock and boats, a pleasant yard cascading down to the lake with a view of the island where we pick blueberries.
It has nice plumbing, high-speed internet provided by the state of Maine to impoverished lake dwellers and easy access to the touristy spots and lobster rolls, etc.My family has a log cabin in NY. It has a well, but not a toilet. (It has a composting toilet that we call the poo scrambler, but no-one ever wants to use it.) It's next to an open pit mine, and my parents bought it for $15,000 in the late 80's and it has only depreciated since then.

I have a relative who is bonkers about "chemicals". She was admiring our cool wallpaper, and she asked, "were you able to find someone who makes non-toxic wallpaper?" Is that a thing? I don't think it's a thing.

@kingrat @edgeworth Periodic stuff is one of the cases for which I appreciate the cloud. Also slow storage. I put tons of stuff on S3 or other slow edge servers that are cheap. Compute and especially fast IO speed never seems economical on cloud. I also experience a serious data deletion or major outage failure on cloud about once every 2 years, which is on par with physical stuff.

@kingrat @edgeworth I've also managed a system with 200-300 physical machines. The amount we would have had to pay to get the same data throughput on the cloud would have been crippling compared to the cost of the hardware and the three sysadmins we had.

Somehow, the world has been persuaded to put their code inside little container boxes that are then put inside virtual machines that run on cloud hardware that costs 3x as much as owning your own hardware.

@edgeworth in my experience, there still needs to be sysops / sres for both cases, and the frequency of failure, be it hardware or human error, seems the same.
I recently tried to pitch some old coworkers who run a few WordPress clients on this. They spend 30k/yr on cloud rental to get what could be supported on 10k/yr of owned and hosted hardware. I told them to pay me 10k/yr to manage it and keep the 10k/yr in savings. There's no way doing that would take more than 100hrs/yr of my time. I think those numbers are reasonable and scale to the favor of the company buying their own hardware and paying a sysadmin.
