Agreed. That THIS administration wouldn't simply lie and promise not to do particularly egregious things it has every intention of doing (and that #Anthropic doesn't actually give a shit about) suggests that there was much more to it than the cover story.

I am keenly aware of how fantastically blessed I am to have done 21 years active duty with the Army National Guard during the height of GWoT and come out with my body and soul mostly intact and a pension (and disability rating) that lets me have a modest life taking care of my kids and making music.

But I'm also keenly aware of how much it was a sucker's bet and how many things could have gone wrong to prevent me from "winning"

Some things to keep in mind about the #USmil, which I am thinking about for no particular reason:

- No one gets promoted for telling their boss "no" or "it cannot be done at an acceptable cost"--even if that's the correct answer.

- A room full of generals is a room full of people who have said "yes" many, many times. They may have the individual capacity to buck authority, but it is not a _practiced_ capacity.

- The institutional norm of subordination to civil authority is incredibly strong.

I don't know why I didn't find this earlier. Consent-O-Matic automagically answers the cookie preferences on a site according to your pre-determined answers. Good options for exceptions and whatnot, too. I have found it to be pretty darned effective.

What do we like for desktop RSS readers?

Bonus if it's multi-platform, but I'm mostly on Debian and KDE.

I do not wish to use a web-based service (edit: though I'd consider something self hosted). I am still mourning Google Reader.

I don't understand why someone would want computers to do their correspondence.

I invested a great deal of time and energy into writing a thank you email to someone whose work had a substantial impact on my post-Army career arc. They responded with an AI-generated slop email. It was one of the most discouraging things I've ever received.

This is sad. And probably more true than I want to think about.

But if a person can't be bothered to create a thing, why should a person be bothered to enjoy it?

In the mix of life, be the signal, not the noise.

And when you aren't the signal, be the carrier for someone else's signal.

And sometimes the world could use a filter or EQ or compressor, and that's good work, too.

A lot of little signals could use a good pre-amp, and that is a real calling.

Strive for good balance, and only hard pan when the song requires it.

And once the music is really good

make it loud.
