@hellomiakoda can't do data over them, which is useful for docking

I have somehow never posted about Dell's glorious solution for 240W charging over USB-C, back when the limit of the connector was 100W: The double type-c plug with custom vendor commands to request a non-compliant 120W per port

@freya @sendai @PepperTheVixen it's still that way basically. Sun was the last company to seriously invest into the linux accessibility. Not even out of the goodness of their own hearts, but as a requirement for government contracts. Things have essentially just been bitrotting since then with the demise of them and the workstation market.

Some folks mostly from GNOME have started a new modern stack (Newton) recently, but imo it'll be a long while before any improvements get plumbed through.

it's very funny (sad) how desperately corporations always replace the "reduce" part of the slogan with literally anything else

I do love how that nuclear waste message, written to be legible and convey danger for millennia, was completely defeated in just a few years merely by being too memeable

@artemist easy solution, they should finally just mandate blister packs for most medication. It's embarrassing that it hasn't been done yet considering the overwhelming scientific evidence.

@artemist For the record, because people always underestimate it, we're not talking about small effect sizes here:

It's almost universally a ~40% drop in all overdose related metrics, which translates to a ~30% drop in unintentional poisonings of any kind. UK reported a ~60% drop in overdose related liver transplants from mandating blister packs. 65% more effective in preventing child access to medication than "child resistant" pill bottles.

It just feels like the sort of contrived seeming line you'd make someone say in a novel after the chapter that details the oppression of the people making the widgets, in order to set up the class conflict the book centers around.

And yeah, tech media at large does really just act like if these devices just appeared on shelves out of the æther and that explains a lot, I ever thought about that.

I boredly clicked a MKBHD video a while back where he unboxes a sealed original iphone. I keep thinking about it, because he talks up how it was "never gazed upon nor touched by human hands".

What do you mean Marquess, "no human" 🧐

Of course if he'd have thought about it for a second he'd have realized that it had been through dozens of hands and seen by hundreds of people. But he didn't, they just left it in. It's so mundane in it's detachment from reality and somehow that really tickles me.

@vyr @gsuberland There is the Yeston CUTE PET which is adorable and their Sakura and Sakura Sugar editions which look pretty good apart from the tacky waifu adorned backplates, but it's pretty much just that one company

I don't know how I missed this, but turns out that that TETRA, the widely used encrypted radio network, considers their encryption algorithm so secret they only put it in hardware or a secure enclave

And turns out, a few months ago it was discovered what that was perhaps primarily hiding was the super secret key derivation function backdoor that drops the key length from 80 bits to 32 lol

I don't know if there's a term for it yet, but I propose "login fatigue" for the practice of constantly logging out your users or especially employees after short times of inactivity, thus training them to constantly enter their passwords without much thinking and making them orders of magnitude more likely to fall for phishing sites

The great tragedy of being locked on fedi is that all of the lovely people will be scared of sending you a request because you haven't anointed them with a mystical magic sword yet while all of the tech dudes who think the world is their oyster will send them incessantly regardless of what you put in your bio

Fun D-Ticket quirk: None of the ferries on the bodensee are included, however! There are busses that use the ferry and those are included. And you can just get out of the bus on the ship.
