in 2025, we have a new source for these vague falsehoods: the humble large language model. LLMs can synthesise "new wive's tales" on demand, without the user even needing to ask.

ask for methods to prevent cheese sliding off pizza and be told to add glue. ask for something absurd, like a a conversion of kilometres to oranges, and get a fun story about how many oranges a horse will eat to travel a thousand kilometres. google's summaries even helpfully cite their sources, regardless of whether the source contains the information presented.

folkloric remedies are alive and well in the modern era. we don't need to worry about running out - the biggest tech companies on the planet are pouring billions of dollars and petabytes of pirated knowledge into generating all-new factoids every single day. ask a question to a probabilistic text synthesiser that hates to say no and you're sure to see something fun.

in its heyday, tumblr was a bastion of the old wive's tale. a sacred place where folk tales not only spread, but originated, with new and exciting factoids being written anew by teenagers whose ability to make up compelling yet mundane untruths was surpassed only by their love for toxic yaoi.

users with names like "sherlocks-left-pinky-finger-official" would authoritatively state that "good" came from the word "god" as a push by puritans in the 1700s to make americans mentally associate goodness with holiness, and "clark-kent-is-my-son" would reply "this makes sO MUCH SENSE I AM SCREAMING". then, someone would screenshot it and post it to internet mega funny dot net with the title "Mind. Blown." and that screenshot would circulate for seven years, becoming progressively more JPEGged.

if you can think of any cool and fun facts that you leaned from tumblr (either directly or via screenshot), consider googling it at some point. especially if that fact pertains to greek gods and/or historical figures that have appeared in the play Hamilton.

one thing the internet has largely diminished is the abundance of completely baseless advice you used to get. your mum would tell you "wait an hour before swimming or you'll get cramps" or "if someone has the hiccups, shout 'boo!' and scare them to get rid of them" and you'd just believe it.

"hey dad, what do you do if you get a jellyfish sting?" "get someone to pee on it." "okay, thanks!" and then you just tuck that little nugget of wisdom away and repeat it when your friend asks you the same question seventeen years later.

do i still believe that the great wall of china is "the only man-made object visible from space?" of course not. does the phrase "visible from space" with no qualifications on distance or camera technology even mean anything? not really. but ask me to name things you can see from the moon and my immediate first instinct will always be to say the great wall of china.

📧 one new message for suggestions at unicode dot org

    FROM: :angry_steam: Conserned Citizen
    SUBJECT: it was YOU

i've have been trying for MOTHS to track down who made the lowercase lettre a in ALL the fonts have that STUPID EFFING DESIGN (sorry for course language). who in ever in history has wrote a letter a with a SWOOPSH CURVE ON TOP. loteraly NEVER!

then i found your "unicode" that aparently tells all the fonts how to make characters. its your JOBS to make the letters in english and french and so on. and guess what? you have all been preocupied with adding SUCHI EMOJIS 🍣🍥🍜🍙 instead of fixing the leter a (literally the FIRST letter in the intire alphabet).

and you know whata even worse? look at this: @ the email symbol. it has a NIRMAL A INSIDE OF IT!!! it you take the circle off the outside it is the correct letter! ADD THE EMAIL SYBOL @ WITHOUT THE CIRCLE TO UNICODE SO WE CAN MOVE PASSED THIS CATEGORICAL ERROR. i will even comunicate in emoji language since that is apparently all you can understand: @ ➖ ⭕ 🟰 👍

how am i suposed to explain to my son that the phone has has a WRONG letter in it? this has needs to be fixed UGENTLY.

p.s. fhank you for making "arial" in microsoft word. apart from ONE GLARING ISUE (I WONDER WHAT THAT COULD BE) it is a very nice font. i have sent this email from out look using "arial" as a sing of my appreciation .

rural driving in aus: start in the town of Garrawuppa, population 87, consisting of a post office and a bakery selling vegemite scrolls, and home to a self professed "old mate" who remembers an old mate who remembers when this town had a train station taking you to the nearby (seventy kilometres away) gold mine. drive for one hour in a random direction. there are no visible signs of civilisation anywhere. stop the car to allow an echidna to cross the road. your phone has one bar of "E". a sign tells you to turn back unless you have five litres of water per person, and not to leave your vehicle under any circumstances, including a breakdown. the nearest servo is in Garrawuppa

rural driving in england: start in the town of Brentleysham-upon-Willingsby, population 5,210, consisting of all the amenities needed for modern life, and home to a family of knitters who have passed down a unique and world-renowned style of jumper down for generations. drive for one hour in a random direction. you have passed six more towns and are now in Old Foldopperstokesshireton, population 3,398. stop the car to allow the world-renowned Jam Parade Marching Band to cross the road. the nearest petrol station with miniature Greggs and Sainsbury's is right next to you

    in no particular order

    1. OpenSSH. a clever play on words, a frankly indulgent use of shading, a timeful (antonym of timeless) use of drop shadow, and a tagline that never has, nor will, seen any use. all displayed as a GIF that can be easily made over ten kilobytes smaller by simply converting it to PNG, a format that has been supported in web browsers since internet explorer 7 launched in 2006.
    2. strace. the choice of an animal associated with an idiom about ignoring things that make you uncomfortable as the mascot for a tool frequently used for performance tracking is inspired. the look on its face asks if you really want to resort to using this tool. the presence of those varying line thicknesses harkens back to the era of microsoft's clipart library. it's comforting.
    3. pigz. no abstract representations of concepts or animal mascots here. the name of the project in a soothingly round font, progressively fading away, like an echoing voice shouted into a cave. it encourages your inner monologue to voice its name with reverberation. there can be no doubt as to the project this logo represents. powerful.
    4. GCC. a baby GNU is born from a compiler collection egg. a clever representation of what GCC does, while still incorporating the overarching GNU theme. it gives a refreshing youth to one of the oldest C compilers still in contemporary use. helpfully, the egg is labelled "GCC" in italic capitals. a striking display of clarity and purpose.

Bloplang Pull Request #48592: Add zip method to iterators :gh_closed_1::gh_closed_2::gh_closed_3:

:bean_red: This is a proposal to add the zip method to iterators. This would allow you to join two iterators together, alternating between results from both. E.g. tens.zip(hundreds) would give [10, 100, 20, 200, 30].... This has been the most requested feature on our wishlist for seven months, and my initial implementation here provides a 12% speed up on the test_cases/thousands_of_types.blop. 👍 532 👎 12 🚀 226 👀 114 😕 3

:bot: BlobBot says: Hi red_bean :bean_red: ! Thanks for opening a pull request to Bloplang! I've run your code, and found this: Maximum regression: 0.05%. Maximum improvement: 12.03%. I've assigned curly_brace :curly_brace: to approve your code. Don't forget to leave a star! 👍 221 🚀 179 👀 12

:bot: BlopBot added the "BlopBot Seal of Approval" "No regressions" labels.

:rct_guest: I've never heard of "zip" before. Googling it, it seems to be a compression algorithm? Not sure what this has to do with iterators. I suggest naming it interleave instead. 👍 23 👎 34

:bean_red: zip seems to be pretty widely accepted. For example, Rust and Python call it zip. 👍 27 😕 1

:green_is_my_pepper: yeah i've never head of zip before. interleave is too long tho, how about weave 👍 54 👎 27

↕️ This comment was marked as off-topic.

    ℹ️ :curly_brace: requested 1 change.

:curly_brace: This for loop could be better expressed as a map. 😕 1

 How about spritz? In the idiolect of English spoken by my Discord server, spritz is very commonly used to refer to mixing things together. EDIT If you're going to laugh react, please leave a comment explaining why. 👍 5 😆 143

:curly_brace: That's a bug with your Linux distribution’s zip command, which has nothing to do with Bloplang. Open a thread on the Fedora forums to discuss that, although they'll probably tell you that Fedora 32 is EOL. 👍 66

:rct_guest: Okay, so we have 17 votes in favour of zip, 12 for weave, 5 for spritz, and somehow only 2 for interleave. Oh, and 1 each for sprinkle, intersperse_at_least_two_iterators_with_each_other, and sum. I'm beginning to suspect botting. 👍 7 😕 12

:curly_brace: Hey read bean :bean_red: - this pull request is out of sync with main. Could you rebase on top of the twelve thousand commits that have occurred since you opened this? Thanks! 👍 63 🚀 2

:gale: whats stoping this from being merged? can we get an eta 👍 12 😕 2

:rct_guest: It's mostly a debate on the name to use. I'm not sure why people aren't voting for interleave. I've provided numerous arguments as to why it's the obvious option, and I've even linked a conversation with ChatGPT 4-o proving that it makes the most sense. Sigh. 👍 2 😕 70 😆 11

words/pronunciations i could see myself using if i ever moved to the UK, in decreasing order of likelihood:

    • lorry VS truck (a delightful word)
    • crisps VS chips (aussie english using the same word for potato chips and hot chips is dumb)
    • trousers VS pants (based and wallacepilled)
    • pants VS underpants (this is going to get confusing so i should probably adapt quickly)
    • whaʔ VS what (very fun to say)
    • /ˈpastə/ VS /ˈpɐːstə/ (unpleasant to my ears but i could maybe one day get used to it)
    • aubergine VS eggplant (removes the amusing mental imagery of a half-egg, half-plant hybrid)
    • dayta VS dahta (i am NOT calling it a daytabase.)
    • yoggert VS yo-ghurt (the british pronunciation sounds like a speech synthesiser that doesn't have a rule for yoghurt and is falling back to a flawed "default" mode)
    • tacko VS tahco (what? why)
    • flip-flops/sandals VS thongs (i don't care if people double-take when i tell them my thong fell off in the macca's parking lot. i will take this word with me to the grave)
    • speedos VS budgie smugglers (self explanatory)
    • lemon-lime beverage VS lemonade (why is australia the only country in the world to get this right?!)

if there are any #GNOME designers/artists (gnomes? gnome heads? gnomish sourcerers? gnaphic gnesigners?) seeing this, does it comply with the HIG in your opinion? what would you suggest changing if not?

the cheesecrater icon uses the standard rustacean image, which doesn't have that smooth, rounded look the HIG usually suggests, but i lack the skill to make a "blobby" version of ferris. :ferris_og:

the crates browser, with its triple-pane layout (third screenshot), is the most complicated of them, but it's based on the design of the crates.io website, which displays the readme alongside a right-aligned "metadata" pane.

(also: either it's very hard to write descriptive alt text for UI design screenshots, or i am very bad at it. possibly both.)
