cannot believe how stressed i am that my friends in florida are refusing to get the fuck out of dodge. the soil is already saturated, you weirdos! ANY rain is going to be a flood!
@feld yes, as far as I understand the way it works is that every user gets a SQLite-style single file database that functions as a mailbox to accommodate the need for async usage.
IM clients that use S3 OBJ storage are an absolutely genius idea. It's a fully encrypted, highly available chat client with a protocol-level server implementation. Egress for most S3 providers is usually cheap as fuck or free, and some of these apps use automatically keying PGP to make it work using plaintext files.
There’s no such thing as “COVID Doomerism.” The reality of the situation is that the healthy are simply asking the disabled to go die somewhere in quiet.
@augieray growing up, my parents always spoke about JC like he was mankind's greatest villain. My mom once, after a few margaritas, sheepishly admitted to me that she voted for Carter and has been torn up about it ever since.
So, naturally, as a dumb kid I'm thinking that this guy must have been a seriously bad man. When Wikipedia came around, I started reading about him, and felt so betrayed by my parents' lies that I left the Christian faith wholesale. It was the final straw, really.
@ernie you know, I have to wonder if the inaction on prosecuting LLM training companies actually introduced a legal loophole for libraries.
Consider that right now, the American legal standard is that GenAI output is considered a derivative work, even if it derived it from 30 billion works. I wonder if the Internet Archive "chunked" editions of books together into a specialized model, could they then "loan" the book out by inferencing a near exact but legally 'distinct' copy of that work?
@ernie after all, coaxing an LLM to reproduce a reference work basically in full is pretty established research at this point. We know it's possible — it's how the tech started, by being able to reproduce a ground truth image despite never having actually been exposed to the original file.
it's weird seeing cops talk about college-age kids knowing how to barricade doors. like, i'm 36 and i was taught how to do that in middle school. we did 'shooter preparedness drills' once a month.
@AnarchoNinaWrites yeah if anyone ever says that this was all spontaneous, just remind them that a lot of these people were wearing t-shirts with January 6th printed on them. I know that t-shirt printing tech has really improved but that at least illustrates a degree of fore-knowledge on the ground. Everyone who was there knew precisely what they were up to.
@mttaggart yerp. once more for the people in the cheap seats: don't build your livelihood off of the assumption that a massively subsidized service will always be there.
